In this two-volume set Leonard Talmy defines the field of cognitive semantics. He approaches the question of how language organizes conceptual material both at a general level and by analyzing a crucial set of particular conceptual domains: space and time, motion and location, causation and force interaction, and attention and viewpoint. Talmy maintains that these are among the most fundamental parameters by which language structures conception. By combining these conceptual domains into an integrated whole, Talmy shows, we advance our understanding of the overall conceptual and semantic structure of natural language. Volume 1 examines the fundamental systems by which language shapes concepts. Volume 2 sets forth typologies according to which concepts are structured and the processes by which they are structured.

Talmy: un approccio pragmatico alla scienza cognitiva, 2000-12-10
Fin dall'inizio degli anni settanta, Talmy ha sviluppato una descrizione linguistica delle strutture cognitive, concentrando la propria ricerca sull'analisi di come le costruzioni grammaticali specificano l'informazione concettuale e rispecchiano le proprietà gestaltiche e le relazioni causali di una situazione empirica. La teoria di Talmy è caratterizzata dall'ipotesi fondamentale secondo cui un enunciato evoca nell'ascoltatore l'"immagine d'una situazie reale o cognitiva". Questa prospettiva teorica ha evidenziato subito il problema dell'intertraduzione mentale tra il sistema simbolico del linguaggio e quello delle rappresentazioni cognitive. La RC non implica, tuttavia, una specifica relazione con il sistema visivo; al contrario, la RC è il prodotto dell'integrazione dell'informazione resa disponibile da diverse facoltà cognitive e da tutte le modalità sensoriali. Le RC, pertanto, sono simili in spirito alle rappresentazioni schematiche descritte da Langacker [1987] o ai Modelli Cognitivi Idealizzati (ICM) di Lakoff [1987]. Cognitive Semantics according to Talmy, 2000-11-15
Talmy takes many of the one-of-a-kind unique analyses presented in his papers and rehashes them for presentation here in this two volume. I had thought this 2-volume set would be a comprehensive summary of all that has gone on in Cognitive Semantics, but it is exclusively Talmy's work, centered around his 70s and 80s work with a few chapters with his 90s articles. Having read Talmy (1985) and Talmy (1988) work and seeing the chapters reproduced his, most of his revisions appear to be fairly light.As with most of Talmy's work, introspection upon analysis of demonstrative phrases plays a mystical role in developing key features of his theories. While most of these articles can be dug out of the library for less than $110 and some the chapters are redundant with each other, this collection makes them far more accessible. This treatment does not attempt to formalize things heavily and instead appeals to intuitions. These intuitions are fruitful and deserve expansion on by a new generations of cognitive scientists who can hopefully pick up on Talmy's semantic puzzles
