Commodification

Commodification Definition

Commodification is the transformation of a non-commodity into a commodity, to assign a monetary value to something that traditionally would not be considered in monetary terms, for example, an idea, identity, gender.

Karl Marx extensively criticized the social impact of commodification under the name commodity fetishism.

Commodification itself became popular during the rise of critical discourse analysis in semiotics.
