Gold standard

What's the definition?
An international monetary system in which the currency of most countries was directly convertible into fixed amounts of gold. For example, the U.S. dollar could be exchanged with the U.S. Treasury for around 1/20 ounce of gold. The gold standard was used in the United States up until 1971.
