Non sufficient funds

Non sufficient funds Definition

The term "non sufficient funds" (NSF) is used in the banking industry to indicate that a demand for payment (a check) cannot be honored because insufficient funds are available in the account on which the instrument was drawn.

Many banks will charge a fee for cheques which cannot be cashed; this fee is generally passed on to the offending customer along with a fee from the institution which attempted to cash the check.
