Specialist

What's the definition?
A floor member of an exchange who is responsible for making a fair and orderly market in a particular security. In general, a specialist job is to make a two-sided market by buying and selling for his own account in order to reduce disparities in supply and demand. Essentially, specialists will buy or sell when no one else will, in order to stabilize the market in the security in which they are responsible.
