Ice Hunt

James Rollins invokes the polar environment so vividly you can hear the wind shriek and feel the ice forming on your nose, and the scientific/medical puzzles at the story's heart may remind you of Michael Crichton's best. The characters, while mostly familiar hero or villain types, are crisply drawn and in some cases quite sympathetic, but it's the nonstop action that carries you along. During several climactic chase scenes, you may find yourself laughing in pure delight--or gasping for breath--as Rollins keeps finding ways to ratchet up the tension one more notch. Action packed!, 2008-07-23
This book was a roller coaster of action. It takes right off from the first minute and doesn't let up until the end. The twists were great. I always have wanted to live in all the places he explores in the book. The main character was likeable and you rooted for him to get together with the girl. He also made the "grendel" characters believable and scary. To have all the main characters confronting multiple threats was very well done.

One problem I had was (Spoilers) that all of the good guys survived. The author let you believe that people died and then one by one it was revealed that they didn't.

The item that kept this book from being 5 stars was perhaps just a personal preference. If you wanted the bad guy to be an evil Russian, I don't have a problem with that. However, the bad guy was all of the Russians...which is also fine. So I knew that somewhere in the book, it would be "revealed" that the United States was also the enemy. I thought it was ridiculous to have the Delta Force team become evil, and then citing all of those evil things that the US has done. When the Deltas decided to kill everyone at Omega Station, I began to lose interest and respect. I know it's just my personal preference, but I get tired of reading books and watching movies in which the US is so evil. I know our country is not perfect, but we are the best thing out there.

Overall a great, action packed book.

This is definately one of my favourite novels by James!
Strange creatures, submarines, firefights on land in the air and the sea, who could ask for more? Continuous danger and excitement just the way I like it! Throw in a government conspiracy and you have yet again an amazing story!
I could not put it down and finished it in 2 days!

Most underrated Rollins book, 2008-06-26
This is certainly one of Rollins best books. I don't think it gets the proper amount of respect it deserves. It contains great adventure, some of his best action scenes, good characters that you cheer for, great science and intrigue, and of course x-files type monsters. Rollins has kind of gotten away from his monsters in recent Sigma Force novels, which is okay, but they are always fun. This is certainly Rollins' most explosive book...AWESOME!!

Good story line, like no other, I was not disappointed with Ice Hunt. He takes the unbelievable and twists them into a reality, very vivid I felt as if I could have been there. My only hope is that James Rollins can continue to crank out more books and quickly!

Bang out of the gate, lame finish, 2008-04-16
There's a lot going on Ice Hunt, and things get off to the kind of start we expect out of genre thrillers -- dozens of plot threads, abounding mysteries, new characters to meet every few pages. The problem is that, about halfway through, you start to wonder whether Rollins hasn't painted himself into a corner and, in the last 50 pages or so, it's simply a delirium. He can't possibly tie up all the loose ends and he starts writing frantic, page-long scene shifts that eventually give you whiplash.

There are so many characters (a pointlessly large number in fact) that he actually gives you a libretto at the beginning of the book. He probably meant it as helpful, but it should really serve as a warning.

Plus there's an awful lot of what seems to me like a very cheap trick from someone who's supposed to be a seasoned writer of thrillers: "Ah, you thought that guy was dead? Nope, he isn't!" "Ah, you believed me when I said the bomb couldn't be disarmed? Naw, really, it wasn't true." "Oh, all those monsters? Well, um, they just sort of ... disappear."

It's incredibly irritating and incredibly amateurish. I suspect this'll be my last Rollins novel.
