Product Description

For as long as she can remember, Lady Adriana Sutton has adored Colton Wyndham, to whom she has been promised by an agreement of courtship and betrothal since childhood. As a young girl, she was wounded by Colton's stubborn refusal to comply with his father's wishes and by his angry departure. He was too proud and too stubborn to accept a future not of his own choosing. Rather than submit, he fled from his ancestral home for a life of adventure and danger as an officer in the British army.

The years have been immensely kind to Lady Adriana. No longer the plain, thin tomboy Colton had spurned, she has blossomed into an uncommon beauty desired by nearly every eligible bachelor in the land. Yet the only man she desires is the decorated hero who has finally come home to claim his rightful title. Arrogant, unmoved, and seductive as ever, he remains averse to the idea of their betrothal in spite of his growing desire for her.

To demonstrate his belief that love cannot be forced, Colton agrees to court Lady Adriana for ninety days, after which time he will be allowed to keep his precious freedom if he so wishes. But much has changed since he balked at his father's plans. Forced into a courtship with this stunning, spirited woman, who is as different today from the young chit he left behind as spring is to winter, the heroic heart that was once closed to Adriana is moved by her charm, her grace, and her sensuality ... and begins to yield. But a secret from Colton's past may doom their burgeoning love ... even as the treacherous schemes of a sinister rival threaten to steal the remarkable lady from his arms forever.

A lush and spellbinding story of passion and betrayal that grandly sweeps the reader into the magnificent ballrooms and intimate boudoirs of Regency England, The Reluctant Suitor is romance as only the incomparable Kathleen Woodiwiss can deliver it -- a love story that will dwell in the reader's heart and memory forever and stand proudly as one of the author's very best.

4 out of 5 starsDon't be "reluctant" to read this!, 2008-02-13
The final book I read authored by KEW after spending the last few weeks immersed in her books...A very good book with the setting in England (Bradford on Avon area) just after the Battle of Waterloo. The heroine (Adriana) is a feisty independent 22 year old who has been betrothed since a child to a neighboring family friend (Colton), who is just as feisty and independent as she. Of course, the usual villains do their utmost to prevent a union between the two, but love always prevails, right? LOL.. Some interesting plot twists help to tie the story up as well.

5 out of 5 starswhy all the bad reviews?, 2008-01-21
I loved The Reluctant Suitor as much as I loved Shanna, or A Rose in Winter. There is nothing wrong with this book. It has it's qualities. Once I started reading I couldn't put it down. The story is charming, placed in high English society, so naturally, there are dialogs that reflect a social status of main characters. There is enough action to keep a reader interested.

1 out of 5 starsAlas...made me cringe, 2007-11-11
The other two good novels that I've read by Woodiwiss led me to the Reluctant Suitor. Oh, I wish I hadn't...the title is more than prophetic. I wish I had practiced some of that reluctance after the first chapter. It now belongs in the hallowed halls of bad romance fiction. That roll of the eye and pitying sigh that other people give (who really really just don't get it, do they?) and you want to shake them and show them that they're wrong, they're missing out. Romance novels can be so good!

Well, this is not one of them, folks. It'd be best to pretend Woodiwiss never wrote this one. It'll take awhile, but it is possible.

It sounded enticing, even promising. But in the end, utterly disappointing. I threw it on the floor several times, so exasperated by the cliches, the constant superficial emotinal ploys, the old come hither routines--all the usual ingredients for a bad romance novel. Characters and story line so flat, meagerly plausible--come on, a promised marriage drawn out by two wealthy families, between a 16 year old boy to a mere toddler who had her heart broken when he refused and leaves for the military life?-PUH-LEASE.

Unimaginative. Bland. Not even half-hearted at times, so formulaic to the point of frustration. Mostly dull, stilted characters and all around painful to read. As sentimental and romantic as I can get, I'm not that sappy or dopey. And it's very long, full of mush and hard to digest dialogue and very little movement or interesting actions, of any kind. Out of no where twists and turns that I had to sigh heavenward for help, hoping against reason that it had to get better. There were so many repeats of ogling, orbs this orbs that, moony-eyes and pent-up frustrations with little substance that I groaned aloud how bad it all was. I can be quite forgiving, usually...

The premise itself wasn't at all bad but it was badly developed and poorly executed. Wooiwiss just was not thinking, it seems. It had potential that, really--as I learned after I read the blasted thing, fell flat after the first chapter. Why read on, you ask? Because there were hints, that promise of it getting better, of Woodiwiss making some small effort to tell a good story. (And who thought a book would go nowhere after the first chapter?) It fails; she fails. Could I pick which parts were the worst? Too many to count. If I'm brutal, if any of us are, it's for you're own good.

Don't waste your time, move on. We can all get though this lackluster read to discover the better ones that are out there. And they are out there, and hopefully one of them will erase this horrible one from memory.

5 out of 5 starsI can't believe all the negative reviews!, 2007-10-20
Ok, maybe I can. In this day and age, people don't like to read. The book has wonderful detail and I love the fact that Kathleen's books take longer than most books to read, otherwise books last me about an hour or two. Hers take me a few days, and I love the luxury of sitting down and knowing I am going to get a good story out of it. I still go back and reread all of her books from time to time, including this one! I look forward to her next and final book. RIP Kathleen.

5 out of 5 starsCOULD NOT PUT IT DOWN!, 2007-06-27
I absolutely LOVED this book! I had a little trouble getting into it at first, but I read it in just a few days (and I'm a slow reader!). It didn't start out like Kathleen's other books, where you kind of knew what was going on, but once I could figure out who everybody was, (within the first 30 pages or so) I absolutely couldn't put it down. It was typical, fabulous Kathleen!! I have read all of her books at least twice. I've read Shanna 3 or 4 times. I will definitely reread this one in the future. If you are a Kathleen Woodiwiss fan, don't let the bad reviews deter you from this gem!!
