Product Description

An athlete's guide to becoming as tough as nails, the Army way

In this hard-hitting, no-nonsense guide, Lieutenant Colonel Mark Bender offers athletes the proven mental-training techniques developed by the military to prepare warriors for battle. An accomplished athlete, award-winning coach, and former athletic director for the European Allied Forces, Bender used these same techniques to prepare 10,000 soldiers for Operation Desert Storm. His mission in Train Tough the Army Way is to shape the way athletes think in order to improve their performance in any sport.

Taking the practical, no-holds-barred approach one would expect from a military physical trainer, Bender tells readers how to get their minds right, prepare for competition, work effectively as team members, deal with distractions, hone a warrior's winnertake-all attitude, and more. By following the mental-conditioning techniques described in this book, readers will be poised to meet any athletic challenge, crush the competition, and have a great time doing it.

5 out of 5 starsif you really want TRUTH and MOTIVATION..., 2008-07-24
Brilliantly simple. Honest. Direct. Applicable.

I have read literally thousands of books, from self-help to spirituality to workout books to martial arts and beyond. (I have a master's degree in writing and an MBA as well as a voracious appetite for reading). There are very few books that I actually purchase, as I am a big believer in the public library system, and most books are forgettable.

This book I IMMEDIATELY went on Amazon and purchased, as well as the Lieutenant Colonel's other book, Operation Excellence. I have underlined, re-read, taken notes, and cracked the spines on both books. Bender has been through the war (literally) and makes connections between sports, the military, spirituality, and everything in between -- but what I treasure the most is that he is not purely theoretical; he breaks it down in both books into actual tactics -- the HOW you do it. And he is HONEST, bare-bones, realistic.

Terrific for a person who pushes themselves, or is looking to push themselves to another level personally and professionally. Important note: he is very much about ethics and responsibility to other people, to society, to the team. This is not a self-centered, self-obsessed approach -- it is about making self better for the good of the whole. (Side note: I used to be a pacifist, and he is my hero -- he has really opened my mind to my own ignorance of the military. I am now volunteering at the local VA hospital). If you like this book, Operation Excellence is a must.

5 out of 5 starsA Mega-Blast of Positive inspiration, 2003-02-08
I bought this on impulse from Waldenbooks -- was pleasantly surprised. Bender has written one of THE best books I've ever read on sports motivation and psychologfy, tieing together The Martial Way and the way of preparedness for sports as a way of life. Very practical, very inspiring -- no shortcuts. This guiy is The Real Deal. I would write more but the book psyched me up so much I've got to go work out....

5 out of 5 starsHighly Entertaining and Informative, 2003-01-12
Train Tough the Army Way, I found the Authors sports strategy concepts an excellent standard for winning. As a career athletic director in Southern California, I purch;ased copies for my coaciting staff with confidence that "Train Tough" will solidify our athletes way of doing business. Bender's military and sporting accounts blend well together for highly entertaining and informative reading. Outstanding Job!

5 out of 5 starsGreat motivation for any athlete or would-be athlete!, 2002-11-19
I spend a lot of time training in the martial arts, and am always on the lookout for information (books, articles, advice) that will help me get the most out of every workout. Sometimes it's hard to keep the right mental attitude and keep your training moving in the right direction. In Train Tough, author Mark Bender definitely kicks your butt into gear and gets you motivated to challenge yourself, overcome counterproductive attitudes, and truly see what you can do in your athletic pursuits. He trained 10,000+ soldiers for Operation Desert Storm--so I think he's amply qualified to get the rest of us off the couch and out of our less-than-effective training ruts. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to be a better athlete, no matter what level they are at, or which sport they do. BUY IT!
