Editorial Reviews
Product Description
When Nancy Goldstone bought a vintage copy of "War and Peace" to win a birthday bet with co-author Larry, the couple began their journey into the world of book collecting, meeting a hilarious cast of eccentrics along the way. Part travel story, part love story, and part memoir, this book provides a delightful love letter to book lovers everywhere.

Amazon.com Review
After years of competitive extravagance at birthday time, Lawrence and Nancy Goldstone decided to limit themselves to $20 each, which is how they came to be in possession of a $10 definitive translation of War and Peace, complete with maps of the major battles and fold-out color illustrations. It is also how they eventually came to be the owners of a $650 edition of Dickens's Martin Chuzzlewit. Used and Rare, the Goldstones' tale of the journey from point A to point B, is a joyful celebration of their love of books. Rare-book dealers are a quirky lot; while one might invite you to caress an Adventures of Tom Sawyer worth thousands, another might turn you away altogether for no apparent reason. The Goldstones' enthusiasm is infectious, and, besides offering a lesson in used-book parlance, the pair remind us that for every book there are at least two stories: the one between the covers, and the one beyond the covers.

2 out of 5 starsHigh-end yawn., 2010-02-02
A quick read. I liked it well enough, but found the constant repetitions of authors (especially Dickens) and/or books that I didn't care about to be annoying. The snobbish "rare books dealers" really put me off, as did the "cheap" book fair. The last fifty pages seemed to last longer than any other part of the book, and not in a good way. I was ready for it to be done before it actually was. I do like books on books, but Lewis Buzbee's "The Yellow-Lighted Bookshop" was much better than this over-hyped headache inducer.

4 out of 5 starsCute, 2009-10-13
This was a cute little book about a married couple who discover their love of rare books. If you love books you will enjoy this book. It made me want to go to the Berkshires to explore all these great used book stores. My only issue was the annoying thing they did where they had to spell the way this one bookseller David spoke. We get that he had an accent one or two sentences was fine but did they really need to spell words in a certain way every time he spoke it got annoying after a while.

3 out of 5 starsEntertaining and informative, 2008-12-03
First Sentence: We came to book collecting because our birthdays fall eight days apart.

[Dust Jacket] Years ago, the Goldstones fled high-paying jobs in Manhattan to live and write in the Berkshires. Enough of an overachieving spark remained to ignite a contest when the search for inexpensive birthday gifts began. While Lawrence settled for a bath brush, Nancy tracked down a ten-dollar copy of "War and Peace," and the couple's love affair with book collecting was born.

For those who love the combination of books, history and collecting, this is a delight. Although there is a tone of being dismissive toward other people, and the phonetic spelling of speech from a New Zealand dealer was annoying, there was much that was good about this book. There were times I found myself laughing out loud. Being set in locations I know quite well also made it fun for me. The best part was the instructive, informative information about book collecting woven into the story and I did find myself taking notes.

5 out of 5 starsPoignant tale of book collecting novices, 2008-09-01
I just finished this book and I found the stories wonderful. This book is obviously aimed it the beginning book collector. It details the adventures of the authors as they began to dip their feet into the world of rare books and collecting. The stories detail the adventures of the authors as they haphazardly jump into collecting books. As a somewhat novice book collector I found the stories both humorous and reassuring. I could see myself in many of the stories. There is a pull to collecting that sometimes overrides good judgment. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 starsExcellent foray into book collecting, 2008-06-19
This is very well done and enjoyable. It is a light treatment of the subject prompted by my journey through the Bookman Series by Dunning.
