Product Description
At the wedding of a young man from a middle-class apartment building in Bombay, the men and women of this unique community gather together and look back on their youthful, idealistic selves and consider the changes the years have wrought. The lives of the Parsi men and women who grew up together in Wadi Baug are revealed in all their complicated humanity: Adi Patel's disintegration into alcoholism; Dosamai's gossiping tongue; and Soli Contractor's betrayal and heartbreak. And observing it all is Rusi Bilimoria, a disillusioned businessman who struggles to make sense of his life and hold together a fraying community.

4 out of 5 starsEntertaining read, 2008-09-09
I enjoyed "Bombay Time". It's a bunch of small tales about the lives of various neighbors who get together for a wedding reception. The stories are mostly sad, mainly due to lost love.
My only complaint about this book is the ending is too dragged out.

Set in the 60s and 70s, this book evokes a description of a quainter time and looks into the the lives of of a neighborhood of Parsis living in urban Bombay. The Parsis are peoples that migrated from Persia to India several hundred years ago to escape Islamic persecution, and this book tells us in touching detail how present-day Parsis live their lives. You read the angst with which the Jewish girlfriend of a Parsi boy decides to leave India for Israel and you wonder if a similar decisions might not have been taken by Parsis as well if they had a homeland to go back to. Fortunately for India, they remained and flourished and became full Indians.

While the specifics of this book make it a book about Parsis, Indians or Bombayites, the sensitivity with which Umrigar portrays the frailties, eccentrities, successes and failures of her community makes it a deep and loving foray into the human condition.

5 out of 5 starsAbsolutely fantastic book, 2008-06-30
I've read a lot of books by South Asian authors and have been disappointed more than enthralled since so many write novels with extremely depressing characters and storylines.

Not this one though! This book had be captivated from the beginning and I found myself extremely interested in every single character storyline--including that of the city of Bombay. I was also pushed to do a little more research into the Parsi's--where they came from and what their history is. I was truly fascinated by the "Tower of Silence".

Great book Umrigar!

5 out of 5 starsA look at life in Mumbai, 2008-05-27
I learned more from these books about life in Mumbai than on my three trips to that city. The books are well written and the words just flow.

4 out of 5 starsAmazing Author - Great Story, 2007-08-06
I highly recommend this book and The Space Between Us. Thrity Umrigar is an outstanding author - her characters and their lives come to life before you. You can not put her books down. I felt like I knew every single character personally by the end of her books. I can honestly say, I did not want her books to end. I look forward to reading anything she writes. Do not pass this author up!
