Editorial Reviews
Product Description
Precious metal clay is an exciting new material made from fine silver dust in a binder that can be used just like ordinary modeling clay. However, once fired, the silver dust fuses together to become pure silver. This unique and versatile material gives crafters of all levels the opportunity to design and create unique silver jewelry--a technique once reserved only for trained silversmiths.

Artist Xuella Arnold demonstrates how precious metal clay can be used alongside traditional methods of jewelry making, and combined with a range of natural and manmade materials to create truly unique designs. You'll find a variety of step-by-step projects along with inspirational ideas to develop your own designs. The book contains an introduction to the tools of the trade and types of clay, as well as step-by-step instructions for mastering precious metal clay techniques such as cutting, molding, combining with other materials, and firing.

Perfect for all beaders, jewelry makers, crafters and ceramicists interested in making jewelry and gifts who want to apply precious metal clay to their discipline.

2 out of 5 starsSad but TRUE...., 2008-08-11
I must say I agree with the previous reviewer and I really hate to speak badly about any PMC book. I am so excited about everything PMC and look forward to new books. This book is not great. I don't think I would recommend it for a beginner because of the poor finishing techniques. It was as if she was rushing to get the pieces done to go to press. I have almost all of the PMC and Art Clay books and I wish I could return this one. The starfish earrings are the best project and there are simple finishing errors, if corrected, could have made them spectacular. The leaf ring wasn't that bad.
I guess I will keep it to remind me what not to do with precious metal clay. Save your money! Sorry Xuella.

2 out of 5 starsSadly Disappointed, 2008-08-07
I have practically every book on Metal Clay, with few exceptions, they have almost always lived up to expectations and provided "new" ideas and techniques. Unfortunately, I was not overly impressed by this new book on one of my favourite media. Was there anything new? Simply put...NO. Everything has been done before and in my opinion with a lot more imagination and care for detail than this. This book appears as a compilation of a variety of projects already widely done with a couple of minor variations. It is 100% at a beginners level, however, I would not recommend this to any of my students as I don't think the projects have been finished all that well or the technique shown to it's best advantage, I would use the Syringe ring and the project using Keum Boo as examples of what not to do!.

The display and assembly of the finished pieces were also not well done, jump rings left open, wire work that was questionable. One project (Turquoise Necklace) was a piece of textured metal clay cut out in a circle ( which was out of shape and appears to have a crack on one side), this had a flower cutter shape cut out in the middle with two holes at the top for the tigertale wire to be threaded to hang it and three holes at the bottom for some "dangles". I did not find this "gorgeous" as the title suggested at all.

There are some highly respected artists whose beginners books will take you on your Metal Clay journey in a far more satisfying manner, Tim McCreight, CeCe Wire, Sherri Haab to name a few. Metal Clay has developed rapidly over the past 10 years, and this art form should not be seen as a quick way to create jewellery which is the impression I got after going through this book.

Reviews are very subjective, however I urge you to take the time to either look through this book thoroughly first if you are able to make sure it is what you want. If your not a beginner, I would not even do this. I have taken the time to write well over 50 reviews on books purchased and this is only the 4th time that I have been compelled to write not very flattering coments. It was something I did not do lightly...Unfortunately I won't be recommending this to my students.
