5 out of 5 starsvaluable desk reference, 2005-07-21
Freshly updated to cover post-9/11 topics like national-security detention and military-commission trials, this little work is a handy index to a sweeping range of wartime law topics. It can be useful to lawyers or law students encountering issues like recruitment disputes, conscientious objector applications, separation/discharge hassles, "don't ask, don't tell," stop-loss appeals, sexual harassment complaints -- not just how to defend a servicemember in traditional courts-martial. The "brief history of American military law" chapter is highly illuminating.

Of course, this booklet is only the first step in researching a case (for instance, command-influence doctrine has had considerable caselaw since 2003) but it does provide all the key statute and case references to begin that research. Indispensible.

5 out of 5 starsNational Security and Military Law, 2003-08-27
This book is well written and offers the law student or the practioner the necessary information on this important subject given our "current events". Since I have a background in international export and trade enforcement (and further practice international business law and teach the subject at two Univeristy MBA programs), I enjoyed learning from Mr. Shanor and Mr. Hogue's review of the many subjects related to national security. I thought the coverage and case law supporting the constitutional development of national security law in the USA was well done. I have little exposure to the military law issues but learned a great deal from my review of this book. This book is going on my office book shelf for easy reference when these issues arise in my international law practice. Further, I think it is a book worth reading for those that are curious to know how the national security and military law developed and how it is applied today in our legal system. I highly recommend the book to those that are intellectually curious about our military legal system and the application of national security laws.
