The Welcoming

2 out of 5 starsWhat a difference 22 years makes..., 2006-08-30
I am a huge Nora Roberts fan, but it is evident in these early works what a difference 22 years of writing has made for her.
These are so-so short stories that show hints of her current style without the polish.
Risky Business and The Welcoming were okay - nothing special - but could have used a little more character development. Okay as a short stories go.
Storm Warning was definitely not her best effort and could have used about 100 pages of character development to explain the history of the two lead characters - especially the male. (Maybe his character was indicative of the time it was written in and the style used back in 1984.)
All in all an interesting look at her early efforts/style, but her more current works are much better.

4 out of 5 starsPretty decent , 2006-08-26
This 3 in 1 book by Nora Roberts is the 2006 edition. The first and the third stories are the best. The second one is a little slow, but overall, it is worth reading.

4 out of 5 starsA collection of 3 almost 2 decades old mystery/romances., 2006-08-14
I have been reading Nora Roberts and her alter ego J.D. Robb for sometime but never saw these three stories before. I liked the first one okay, felt the second had issues - especially the "hero", and loved the third one.

Each of the stories has the common element of danger thus the collection's title "Dangerous". In "Risky Business" Liz Palmer is a single mom who lives in Cozumel, Mexico and runs a dive shop and dive/fishing/tour boat rental business. She has been there ten years and is an expert at what she does. She has employees - some more transient than others. As she takes some tourists on a glass bottom boat outing, she is upset that one of her employees of only a few weeks, Jerry Sharpe, has not shown up to help her. However, as they tour in the boat gasps and scream suddenly come from the group as Liz sees Jerry's dead body weighed down by an anchor. The police question Liz over and over but she doesn't really know anything and then Joshua Sharpe, attorney from Philadelphia and Jerry's identical twin brother, shows up and also quizzes her. As Joshua and Liz work to find Jerry's killer and what he was up to, an attraction grows. My problem with this story was that Joshua was not as much romantic as many of Ms. Roberts' other heroes. Their romance felt a little forced. But overall a fun read.

My least favorite was "Storm Warning" which is a whodunit like the movie "Clue". While Autumn and her Aunt Tabby were wonderfully fleshed out characters, Lucas seemed way too mean to Autumn and too mysterious and shallow. The mystery was fun though.

Finally my favorite, "The Welcoming" was very sweet and touching for the romance and also exciting for the mystery/suspense so I won't tell anymore here except to say if you haven't read this one, you will enjoy it!

2 out of 5 starsNot for die hard fans!, 2003-11-18
I gave this book two stars - one for Risky Business and one for The Welcoming - they are typical stories written by my favorite author. Predictable, yes, but enjoyable. Storm Warning made me mad. I wish I had not spent the time trying to figure it out, It made no sense! Do not buy this book. Go check it out at the library and read the first and last story, but skip Storm Warning!

3 out of 5 starsFirst story great....and that's where it ends., 2003-07-19
I can't beleive I actually found something written by Nora that I did not like. The first story in this collection is excellent and is worth purchasing the book for. However, the second story is horrible and the male character is just a major creep. I almost didn't finish it. The third story is OK, and worth your time to read, just not her best. I LOVE Nora, but that second story just didn't cut it. If this is your first Nora book - PLEASE go get something else by her - anything - don't let this one turn you off to her. I feel guilty writing this!!! Sorry Nora!
