Junie B. Jones is thrilled. "The whole entire first grade" is planning a kickball tournament, and this feisty first grader daydreams about being the star of Room One. Unfortunately, where Junie B. goes, trouble must follow. "And it’s called, I accidentally kicked my ball over the fence. And I didn’t want to go get it. So I had to find something else to kick." That something else turns out to be her mom’s watering can--which happens to be full at the time. Now Junie B. has an owie on her piggy toe and it looks like she won't be able to participate in the tournament. But wait! Her friend Sheldon can't play kickball either, due to a spectacular fall in the classroom. Maybe these two can come up with an alternate plan that will still allow Junie B. to be the star! Barbara Park’s inexhaustible beginning chapter-book series has all the ingredients young readers like best: humor, repetition, predictability (with a few surprises), and lots of silly action. Any true fan of Barbara Parks' novels would know that there's going to be a million laughs here for young readers and parents. There's going to be a kick-ball tournament, Junie tries her worst to be the best, and ultimately hilarious lessons will crack-up readers and straighten-out Junie B. Jones.
Well, she'll be straightened out until her next adventure.
Junie B., First Grader: One-Man Band is well worth your time and attention. Families and classrooms will find lots to discuss about how it really ought to be done.

Junie B. Jones, First Grader, is at it again in One-Man Band. The first grade kickball tournament is coming up and Junie B. is so excited. She is going to be the star...until she hurts her piggy toe! So, now what is she going to do? She can't play kickball and she is NOT going to be a cheerleader. There's only one thing left for her to do...be the halftime show! Will she be the star or the flop? This spontaneous first grader seems to get herself into dilemmas no-one can figure out how she got herself into. Read Junie B., First Grader One-Man Band and see how Junie B. got herself in this mess and exactly what she is going to do during the halftime show! Truly hysterical! You can't miss this one!

Excellent Book!!, 2006-11-03
My six year old loves Junie B. Jones. A lot of people are saying that Junie's grammar is bad and it's true. However, that's how many 6 year old children speak. We've read about Junie going through kindergarten and now on to the first grade. I assume her grammar will only improve as she continues to grow and move on to second and third grade, and so on and so on. My daughter has been reading these books since kindergarten and is well above the expected first grade reading level. I don't think the poor grammar hurts the learning process. In fact I think the books play an important part in my child's education and her social life. Junie can be a bit of a brat but she also learns from her mistakes. Besides, What child isn't a brat at least some of the time?

Story Line is Excellent, Grammar Stinks!, 2005-10-17
My son and I read One-Man Band this week. The story line is entertaining -- and true to Barbara Park's creative form; however, poor use of grammar ruined the tale for both of us. Yes, I know that the defiance of grammar rules is supposed to add to the humor of the story, but it was a stumbling block for my son and I as we tried to decipher Junie's comments. Young readers have enough trouble learning to read and write correctly without Barbara Park adding to the confusion. My solution? Keep Junie B. coming -- but without the grammar faux paux!

This is a wonderful book, sure the grammar isn't very good but
that's what makes the book funny.I have all the Junie B. Jones books and love them all. Great for children who are just learning to read!
