Product Description New York Times–bestselling author Amanda Quick’s new Arcane Society novel reveals the passionate— and paranormal—secrets of proper Victorian London.
Called “supremely addictive” by Booklist, the Arcane Society novels, written under both the Amanda Quick and Jayne Ann Krentz names, have pulled readers into a saga filled with steamy romance, drama, and dark intrigue. Her newest novel promises to mesmerize as well.
Leona Hewitt, disguised in men’s formal evening clothes, has secretly made her way into Lord Delbridge’s private museum to retrieve a relic stolen from her family. But someone else is in the dimly lit gallery on the same errand: a tall, blackcloaked man whose very voice is enough to cause her to fall into a trance.
Thaddeus Ware, a mesmerist with psychic gifts, is accustomed to fearful reactions from others—women, in particular. After all, a man who can control the minds of others could rob a lady of her virtue—completely unbeknownst to her. But Leona shows no trace of hysteria in his presence. A gifted crystal worker, she exerts a rather hypnotic power over the hypnotist himself. And she is determined to keep the coveted crystal they manage to recover by giving him the slip at a run-down London inn.
Thaddeus, on assignment for the Arcane Society, knows the menace Leona is courting by absconding with the crystal. A source of remarkable energy, it holds the potential for great destruction. Lord Delbridge has already killed to acquire the crystal, his key to membership in the elite, shadowy group known as the Third Circle. And, with the help of a ruthless hunter of preternatural skill—dubbed the Midnight Monster by the press—Delbridge intends to find Leona. With the stolen crystal in their possession, the danger is only beginning.

Fast-paced and fun paranormal historical romance, 2008-10-20 Leona Hewitt is determined to recover a crystal that has been in her family (on and off) for many years, but was stolen from her mother. Thaddeus Ware, who is a member of the Arcane Society, has mesmerist powers, and is determined to get the same crystal artifact for the Society. They meet over a dead body in the house of a Lord who dabbles in dark powers, both attempting to secretly steal the jewel--and they find that they need both of their skills together to accomplish their goals. Afterwards, Thaddeus is concerned about Leona, who has taken the jewel. The unscrupulous Lord and his associates want the jewel back and also want Leona, who has the power to make the crystal work for them and gain them secrets and power. Leona and Thaddeus are forced to work together again.
As with all Quick's tales, this is a fast and delightful read, particularly if you like paranormal romances.

Interesting Read! , 2008-08-12 I have read quite a few of Quicks books and this one is worth the read! I could not put it down! The subject was interesting and the characters were believeable. The romance could have been a little more involved. Overall, if you like her writing you should be satisfied with this book.

Villains and blackguards, 2008-08-11 Bloody hell! Damnation! The Third Circle is so full of dastardly Victorians blustering on about the disruption of their villainous plans that it's hard to find the plot. That damnable woman keeps interfering and somehow, the cads can't manage to get rid of her in spite of their mastery of the "psychical arts." I like a good paranormal novel, but this is the second of Quick's novels that I've struggled through. Since reading should be enjoyable, not irritating, I'm off to find an author who relies less on formula and cliche.

Better to read than to listen but worth the time, 2008-08-07 I read the other books of this series but purchased The Third Circle on MP3 audio. I have to say that it seemed to lose something in the audio. I would have rated the other books in the Arcane Series (both the Amanda Quick book and the JAK books) as a solid 5 stars. But this one didn't grab me quite like the others. I really attribute that to the reader because it was very difficult at time to distinguish one character from another. That made it difficult to follow. The story itself was good and it did add some information to the Jones family history and the presumed history of the Nightshade organization of the comtemporary JAK novels in the same series. Hearing from Gabriel and Venetia Jones again was also nice since the books following "Second Sight" take place 200 years later and they are deceased. If you have read the previous books or intend to read subsequent books in this series, I would recommend reading this one as well but don't expect it wo be quite as stimulating.
