Product Description
Lucas Davenport has had disturbing cases before— but never one quite like this, in the shocking new Prey novel from the #1 New York Times–bestselling author.

John Sandford’s most recent Davenport novel, Invisible Prey, was hailed as “one of his best books in recent memory” (The Washington Post); “as fresh and entertaining as ever” (Chicago Sun-Times); and “rivetingly readable” (Richmond Times-Dispatch). But this time, he’s got something quite special in store.

A widow comes home to her large house in a wealthy, exclusive suburb to find blood everywhere, no body—and her collegeaged daughter missing. She’s always known that her daughter ran with a bad bunch. What did she call them—Goths? Freaks is more like it, running around with all that makeup and black clothing, listening to that awful music, so attracted to death. And now this.

But the police can’t find the girl, alive or dead, and when a second Goth is found slashed to death in Minneapolis, the widow truly panics. There’s someone she knows, a surgeon named Weather Davenport, whose husband is a big deal with the police, and she implores Weather to get him directly involved. Lucas begins to investigate only reluctantly—but then when a third Goth is slashed in what is now looking like a Jackthe- Ripper series of killings, he starts working it hard. The clues don’t seem to add up, though. And then there’s the young Goth who keeps appearing and disappearing: Who is she? Where does she come from and, more important, where does she vanish to? And why does Lucas keep getting the sneaking suspicion that there is something else going on here . . . something very, very bad indeed?

Filled with his brilliant trademark suspense and some of the most interesting characters in thriller fiction, Phantom Prey is further proof that “Sandford is in a class of his own” (The Orlando Sentinel).

4 out of 5 starsPhantom Prey, 2008-09-04
The return of yet another Lucas Davenport heralds a further chapter in the life of Lucas Davenport. Set in the enviroment of Goth culture, an alien and negative enviroment for most readers. The characters of the victims remain somewhat remote and unsympathedtic more disposable cardboard cutouts than people. The excellent writing and and sheer story telling ability of Mr Sandford however can not hide the slight staleness of the Davenport character who should by all rights have retired (in the real world) some time ago. The plot twists and accompanying psychological disorder of the perpetrator stretched my suspension of disbelief almost to breaking point.
However in the end I just kept on for the ride and what a ride it is. Another in the Prey Series, so un-put-downable it kept me up all night and I read it in one day. The stake out side plot lightened the tension with a humourous aside while Davenport again becomes the focus a yet another psycho serial killer. As comfortable as an old shoe and the ebrace of an old friend, yes Davenport is back. When's the next one coming out?

5 out of 5 starsJohn Sandford is the best, 2008-09-02
I don't care what he writes, Sandford is my absolute favorite author. His characters are totally real. Lucas is a superhero but human. I know JS said he wished he hadn't married him to Weather, but in my view, it hasn't hurt him at all. Virgil Flowers, Kidd, whatever. Just keep writing!

3 out of 5 starsFun as always but kindle edition needs some editing., 2008-08-27
I've always enjoyed the "Prey" novels and I jumped at the chance to get this for my fairly new kindle. Unfortunately there were so many typos in this edition that I found myself distracted by them. I don't know if this sloppiness is only in the kindle format or if this is the case with the hard copy of the book as well. Either way, typos should be eliminated before the book gets published.

By the way, this is the only kindle book I've encountered to have this problem.

4 out of 5 starsyou'll need to keep your wits about, 2008-08-27
John Sandford's novel Phantom Prey is one that will keep your eyes glued to the pages until the book is finished. Yet, while Phantom Prey is an eye-gluing police thriller, it's not the best Davenport Mysteries. So what didn't I like about it? Nothing! Lucas returns and focuses on the home of Heather Toms whose husband is on the lamb for smuggling and dealing narcotics. Ah, but there is a reason other than bail jumping for Lucas to watch this house so closely. (Jeepers, peepers) But just before the final curtain is called Lucas is called to investigate the gruesome scene found at his wife's friends house and now begins the search for Alyssa's missing daughter. I'll say no more, but be warned that Phantom Prey is a book you'll need to keep your wits about to fully understand the twisted scenes of Lucas' investigations.

Editor of the highly recommended novel: The Fates by Georgiou, Tino Fates (2nd Edition)
