Product Description When wealthy matriarch Opal Scarlett vanishes, Joe Pickett is sure one of her greedy sons did her in. But when Joe becomes the victim of violent pranks, he wonders if what's happening has less to do with Opal's disappearance than with the darkest chapter of his own past.

In Plain Sight, 2008-10-01 This is the first book I have read by C. J. Box and it won't be the last. In plain sight caught my eye at a book store and glad that it did. C. J. Box is now one of my favorite authors. The story is one that you have to find out the end. There is an interesting cast of characters in this story. Looking forward to reading his other books to see what happens with Joe Pickett.

Another successful action story in the Joe Pickett series, 2008-07-18 In this installment of the Joe Pickett mystery series, as in several others, the story gets personal. Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett and those he loves are among the targets, and there's a significant body count. As is always true in Box's books, children and animals are not safe from violence; if that bothers you, don't read it.
The novel has a very strong sense of place, a small town in Wyoming at the base of the Bighorn Mountains. Details such as the Stockman's bar and the Burg-O-Pardner restaurant feel right. Local politics and bad blood play a role in the plot. Box also populates the story with an interesting set of supporting characters, including the local sheriff, Joe Pickett's boss, Joe's friend Nate, and others.
I've tried to avoid spoilers other than those on the book jacket, but I will say that the plot won't make sense unless you've read the previous books in the series.
Overall, this is a good book in the series but not Box's best. Some plot elements are retreads from previous books while other reused themes are intended as jokes. Box keeps the action moving along quickly, and this is a fast read.

Plain but not Simple, 2008-03-22 What a good writer C.J. Box is! His "hero" is understated and Box never loses sight of that. The characters are strong, his family is a myriad of quirks and they come along from book to book or stand by themselves.
It's always a good read!

Another winner in the Picket series!, 2007-12-18 I try to write a review without any chance of a spoiler, so all I'll say is that this latest in the Joe Pickett series continues along the same vein as the earlier books in the series, although slightly darker. C.J. Box's writing style continues to get better with each new novel so if you like the other Pickett novels you'll like this one too.

Love Wyoming, 2007-06-23 I bought the first book because it takes place in Wyoming (I have vacationed in the Montana/Wyoming areas many times) and love the way C.J.Box describes Joe Pickett's surroundings. That and the plots keep me buying the next book when it comes out. All have been excellent reading.
