Product Description "It's a cold, hard, cruel fact that my mother loved heroin more than she loved me."
Holly is in her fifth foster home in two years and she's had enough. She's run away before and always been caught quickly. But she's older and wiser now--she's twelve--and this time she gets away clean.
Through tough and tender and angry and funny journal entries, Holly spills out her story. We travel with her across the country--hopping trains, scamming food, sleeping in parks or homeless encampments. And we also travel with her across the gaping holes in her heart--as she finally comes to terms with her mother's addiction and death.
Runaway is a remarkably uplifting portrait of a girl still young and stubborn and naive enough to hold out hope for finding a better place in the world, and within herself, to be.

When catsup packets from MacDonalds are your only food...., 2008-06-07 A provocative book about twelve year-old Holly who runs away from an abusive foster home and dreams of being a gypsy by the sea. Arriving in foster care at age ten after her mother dies of a drug overdose, Holly records her homeless life and the emotions of her past in a journal that a well-meaning teacher gave her. This frighteningly real portrayal of a young runaway and the plight of the homeless in general (the good, the bad and the ugly), gives much needed insight into the unhappy realities of this population. The reader may become aware that the social services system is fallible, particularly with regard to the rights of children, who are ofttimes victims that are seen but not heard, not listened to or believed. Van Draanen emphasizes more how people fail each other as they struggle for their own rights and independence, or as they seek to help others do the same--or not. The author includes a personal afterward which gives the story exceptional credence, and perhaps, one would hope, so that the reader can make more educated choices regarding their own opinions and possibly dealings wtih the homeless in general and runaways in particular.

Middle School Teachers Love It, 2008-05-10 The Young Adult Book Club for my Orange County, CA school district made this our book for May. The story is very intense and very realistic, yet the author has managed to refrain from inappropriate language and/or graphic descriptions of abuse. This makes the book user friendly in a middle school classroom environment. We loved the use of the journal to tell the story through the voice of a very smart and street-wise 6th grade girl. Her adventures are exciting and often scary, but she has dreams for her future and perseveres in the face of crushing odds.
My students are standing in line to read this one. A great read. Highly recommended.

A Sad Story..., 2007-11-07 Holly is a twelve year-old girl who's been through more than most adults probably have. She didn't no her father (he died in some freak tractor accident) and her mother, the only person she ever truly loved was a heroin addict... and now she's gone. Holly doesn't want to be in foster care anymore. The abuse, the violence, the hunger, the lack of love - she can't take it anymore.
So she decides to runaway... And this time she WON'T get caught.
This book is looked through the eyes of a young girl who's homeless and struggling for servival day after day. Although this book is written in journal format it was surprisingly hooking and I found that it hadn't taken me long to read it. This is an emotional story when you'll laugh, cry, and scowl. Read this book: Runaway.
Happy Reading!!

A must read for parents as well as teens, 2007-09-24 Runaway is a powerful depiction of the struggles the homeless encounter on a daily basis, especially for the homeless youth. It is also an eye-opening view of our educational system chooses to either neglect or embrace with empathy the troubles of youth as victims of their parents life choices. Parents, teachers, students alike will enjoy this book; especially those who are familiar with the saga of Sammy Keyes.
