Product Description
The bestselling author of Secret Sanction returns-and this time, Army lawyer Sean Drummond is loaned out to a law firm whose #1 client may have ties to a vicious serial killer and a massive international crime ring. Wherever Sean Drummond goes, it seems that the JAG officer leaves a trail of political fallout in his wake. So when his superiors get an opportunity to loan him to a prestigious law firm, they jump on it, hoping he'll soak up the nuances of civilian lawyering. But almost immediately, dark clouds appear when Sean's predecessor in the loan-out program is murdered. Then Sean begins to sense something amiss with the firm's biggest client, a telecom behemoth with large defense contracts. Now, he must survive in D.C.'s buttoned-down lawyer culture long enough to stop the killer, and long enough to discover why his firm and its top client are willing to kill anyone who gets

Brain Haig has done it again. I could not put this book down which meant it was finished in no time at all. The characters were well thought out and produced a goodly amount of suspense. I highly recommend Private Sector by Brian Haig.

Definitely not his best work. The entire concept of the story was "reaching" a bit.

5 out of 5 starsThis is a great book. A top notch legal, political, business, serial killer thriller!, 2008-01-30
PRIVATE SECTOR by Brian Haig is one of the best books I've read in a long time. It is the first I've read by the author, and it definitely won't be the last. Haig's novels feature Sean Drummond, a 38-year old bachelor who has devoted his life to the army, and is currently a JAG lawyer. The opening of the novel only hints at past adventures before sending Sean onto his next assignment. Sean gets the privelege of going to work in the private sector at the law firm of Culper, Hutch and Westin as part of a program to give military officers "real world" experience.

Drummond's friend, Lisa Murrow, fellow JAG officer had worked in the program at the same firm the previous year and also liked Drummond. One evening, Sean and Lisa agree to meet, but before they do, Lisa is brutally murdered in her parking garage. Drummond is devestated by the murder and asks his boss allow him to notify the family and to be the army assistant in charge of survivor benefits.

Meanwhile, a serial killer is on the loose. He is sick, twisted and genius. His first victim was Lisa Murrow. After his second victim, the police and Army CID Danny Spinelli believe the murders could be related. After the third death, they know they are related. Drummond, along with Lisa's attractive sister Janet, try and look into the murders and find any link between Lisa and the following victims. They find none. Sean begins looking into Lisa's work at the law firm and discovers she had been working heavily with a client called Morris Networks, one of the larget telecommunication firms in the country.

Okay, enough of the plot synopsis. The plot is very complex, full of twists and turns that all make sense in the end. Haig has masterfully written a novel that combines the best of many genres. He details the killings from the murderer's point of view like the best of John Sandford. The legal, and business aspects of the novel rival the best from John Grisham and Joseph Finder. This is also a top notch politcal thriller as the CIA and FBI are forced to get involved for national security reasons. One drawback I have is that after reading the novel, I really don't know Drummond that well. Part of that is because he is a series character and probably better developed in the series as a whole. Also, Drummond's quick, sarcastic wit is at times a distraction.

This is a great book because Haig seamlessly combines so many elements that I love in fiction. This book will entertain you and make you think. A must read for thriller fans.

2 out of 5 starsWay too predictable, 2007-07-31
I really didn't care much for Major Drummond and - although I personally find sacarsim appealing - his went "flat". The beginning premise of a psychotic serial killer was in fact more interesting than what actually ensued. Duh - we have a mega billionaire who is "bent" on owning everything he can get his hands on (could he possibly be a "bad" guy?)- A "new" concept here! We then have a bunch of moronic lawyers - one of whom is a philandering "former" politician (Now - that IS something NEW). Oh and don't forget the idiots at the FBI (my oh my how DO they EVER accomplish anything?) Then just when you think all the sterotypes were covered - along comes the the Director (the director no less) of the CIA and two of his "operatives" giving away the details of a "secret" operation to an assistant DA from Boston and a JAG Major. Yeah - it makes for a believable read!!!! NOT! I know this is a work of fiction - and one does take "some" creative license - BUT - generally with an "air" of believability. With all that said I believe the VERY worst was that it IS predictable. "Hint" - corporate greed!!!
