Product Description
In
A New Agenda for Higher Education
, the authors endorse higher educationâs utility for enhancing the practical as well as intellectual dimensions of life by developing a third, different conception of educational purpose. Based on The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching seminar that brought together educators from six professional fields with faculty from the liberal arts and sciences,
A New Agenda for Higher Education
proposes an educational aim of âpractical reason,â focusing on the interdependence of liberal education and professional training.

An outstanding look at the possibilities of higher ed
, 2008-05-15
I read this book twice in the first week I had it. The authors report on what they've learned through convening a seminar of college faculty across the disciplines, and looking at the ways in which they combined professional training with the consideration of values and dilemmas. The shorthand outcome is that their syllabi tended to have four core elements:
Self: Who am I as a decisionmaker? What are my values, my strengths, my blind spots?
Community: Who else has a stake in the outcomes of my work? What are their values and their preferences?
Responsibilities: What is the nature of the responsibilities of my coming profession? For what am I accountable?
Bodies of Knowledge: What must I know and be able to do to fulfil my responsibilities? What is the body of knowledge of my profession?
But this is just the capsule. Buy the book and experience the richness of the deliberations (not to mention the thoughtful example syllabi). The best book on higher ed I've read in five years.
