Product Description
The new computerized CPA exam became effective in 2004. Focus Notes provides a review of all the basic skills and concepts tests on the CPA exam and teaches important strategies to take the exam faster and more accurately. The Business Environment section of the exam will cover knowledge of the general business environment and business concepts underlying transactions to demonstrate an understanding of the accounting implications. Candidates will be required to demonstrate knowledge of business structure, economic concepts, financial management, information technology, and planning and measurement. Wiley Focus Notes are designed to provide that knowledge in formats that are easy to understand and remember.

 Good study guide, what you can do to make it better, 2008-07-05
Personally, I prefer the Wiley Flash Notes compared to the Becker Flashcards for the following reasons:
1. I prefer the flip-style notebook, you don't have to worry about cards getting out of place, and each section is readily available for review
2. The notes are more comprehensive then the Becker version
However, there are some faults with the Wiley version (specifically for the BEC section).
1. There are a few typos, but not a big distracter
2. There are a few outright errors
a. In the Business Structure section they have included four pages from the Regulation Flash Notes (which can turn out to be a bonus as you can use correction tape and it will give you additional pages to add your own notes)
b. In the Economics section, the Supply Curve graph is actually the Demand Curve
c. The Equilibrium graph really had nothing on it (at least in the set that I had)
3. Some of the more important topics seemed to have been left-off the list, while less important topics made it on the list
Despite the Flash Notes errors (possibly corrected when the new editions come out), I think that you can tailor them into a very workable study guide. In order to do so you will need the following: the Wiley BEC Book, correction tape, and if you have access to one, borrow someone's Becker book or final review. The reason being is that Becker has some helpful mnemonics that you can add to your Flash Notes and the Wiley material has very limited use of mnemonics (if any at all). You can use the Wiley book to fill in the gaps of missing information (as well as have access to numerous multiple choice questions) and you will need the correction tape to make changes to the Flash Notes as you see fit. With a little effort, I believe you can turn the Flash Notes into an all inclusive study guide, provided you still have some sort of multiple choice questions available (either book or software).
All-in-all a very beneficial product, you'll just need to some time and customizing in order for it to fit your needs.

These focus notes are a wonderful tool. There are two major reasons why I suggest buying them.
1) It will save you from writing your own flashcards (which would take a whole lot of hours to do (probably many many days)
2) It beats flashcards. I have purchased flashcards before, and the Focus Notes are much better. You tend to get flash cards out of order...or you may lose some of them. The flashcards I bought did not have many examples, just definitions. The focus notes have definitions and examples.
The only caveat. If you are using Becker, I'd buy their flashcards, because they are geared towards their materials. And their materials are excellent, even though expensive. Probably worth it if you have the money.
The Focus Notes correspond to modules in the Wiley Books. However I am using them with Bisk. I just found the chapters in my Bisk books that correspond to the pages in the Focus Notes. It took a few hours to do this, but it wasn't a big deal. Hope this review helps other CPA candidates.
