Product Description
No matter what your post in an organization, Unwrapping the CIO: Demystifying the Chief Information Officer Position will bring new understanding to this often misunderstood appointment. Author Wayne L. Anderson deftly explains this position in relation to other positions within the corporate workplace. Unwrapping the CIO is for:

  • CIOs who need to understand the job in which they have been placed
  • CEOs who need to better understand the position, challenges, and skill requirements of one of the key areas affecting an organization
  • CFOs who need to understand the position that consumes a great deal of the company’s financial assets
  • IT professionals who need to understand why CIOs make some of the decisions they make
  • Anyone who interacts with CIOs on a regular basis who needs to better understand their actions and behaviors

You may have heard that an appointment to the position of CIO means that your career is over, but that is not necessarily the case. It could be a test of your character, but at the very least, this opportunity may provide some insight into your character. With Anderson’s realistic advice, you too can become an outstanding CIO.

4 out of 5 starsThe CIO Unwapped, 2008-04-06
From the perspective of someone that has been in a senior IT position (CIO) for more than 12 years, this book does a good job of taking the wraps off the CIO position. In the first chapters of this book, it really did not appear to be that great of a book; I wasn't going to rate it very good. As the book continues, my opinion changed. This is a book that gives full coverage of the CIO position. If you are a CIO, want to be a CIO or want to know what the CIO in your organization is or is suppose to be doing this is a comprehensive book that delivers a full picture.

The book has a joke (team illustration) in the middle and an extensive resource of terms in the back, so it is really not as big as it looks, the part of the book to digest is less than 160 pages.

Criticism of the book is that the section of terms and resources in the back that takes up almost 90 pages is better accessed by utilizing google or wikipedia. Another criticism is that the first part of the book is written in first person, yet we do not get a full description or detailed biography of Wayne's credentials and experience. The credentials given are generalized and vague, so I found myself asking (using google too) who is this person and is his experience real and credible for the content? Once past this first person section the reader can get over the lack of specific credentials, realizing the book has good content and a good collection of resources, wisdom and information.

Good resource for Senior IT managers, aspiring CIO, CIO and CEOs. This book covers what the CIO does and has to attempt to do to be successful for and in the organization that they are leading, supporting and transitioning!
