Product Description “My parents suck ass. Banning me from the phone and restricting my computer privileges are the most tyrannical parental gestures I can think of. Don’t they realize that Hope’s the only one who keeps me sane? . . . I don’t see how things could get any worse.”
When her best friend, Hope Weaver, moves away from Pineville, New Jersey, hyperobservant sixteen-year-old Jessica Darling is devastated. A fish out of water at school and a stranger at home, Jessica feels more lost than ever now that the only person with whom she could really communicate has gone. How is she supposed to deal with the boy- and shopping-crazy girls at school, her dad’s obsession with her track meets, her mother salivating over big sister Bethany’s lavish wedding, and her nonexistent love life?
A fresh, funny, utterly compelling fiction debut by first-time novelist Megan McCafferty, Sloppy Firsts is an insightful, true-to-life look at Jessica’s predicament as she embarks on another year of teenage torment--from the dark days of Hope’s departure through her months as a type-A personality turned insomniac to her completely mixed-up feelings about Marcus Flutie, the intelligent and mysterious “Dreg” who works his way into her heart. Like a John Hughes for the twenty-first century, Megan McCafferty taps into the inherent humor and drama of the teen experience. This poignant, hilarious novel is sure to appeal to readers who are still going through it, as well as those who are grateful that they don’t have to go back and grow up all over again.

Super sarcastic fun, 2008-10-25 Sloppy Firsts was my first foray back into teen fiction since I read "the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" I few years ago. There's several things that I quickly noticed about this book. First off, if I had a young daughter, there is not much chance that I would let her read this book at any age younger than 17 (even though I was reading books much worse than this when I was probably 12 and hiding them between the mattresses so my mom wouldn't find out). This book focuses on the story of Jessica Darling, a highschool sophomore, whose best friend had just moved away. Faced with dealing with the lose, Jessica gets caught up in the ups and downs of highschool life, including becoming friends with the school bad boy, ousting the in-crowd, and becoming more and more distance from her family.
Much of the book focuses on two things: Jessica's infatuation with Marcus the school druggie and Jessica's virginity. There's a lot of references to drugs and sex throughout the book (very typical of the high school experience today). While the book deals with the issues in a mature and sensible way, I can understand why my local Borders had this book listed among the adult fiction. All in all, this was a good coming of age novel, one that I would recommend to others.

Isn't She Darling?, 2008-06-10 Jessica 'Notso' Darling is the witty, satirical narrator of this epistolary novel. Through a series of journal entries and wistful emails to her long distance BFF, we learn about Jessica's trials & tribulations as a high school student. From being labeled a 'brainiac', being the subject of a tell-all expose, and dashing her father's dreams of an Olympic athelete, Megan McCafferty tackles all of the teenage angst that some of us have experienced and others of us are just buckling into the seat on the rollercoaster.
McCafferty has three more books in the Jessica Darling series, and I can't wait to see what's in store for her next!

INTRIGUING and WITTY, 2008-06-08 I'm sixteen years old and I could totally relate to this book. I liked it A LOT. Some of the jokes, however, were a little over my head. But I love the writing style of Megan McCafferty, the author.
This book is about a sixteen year old girl who lives in Pineville, New Jersey. Her best friend moves away and she becomes angry. She deals with her angst by running and talking to Marcus Flutie. This book is written in diary format, but reads like a regular first person novel.
