Product Description
Nobody writes a love story as unique and magical as "New York Times" bestselling author Jill Barnett. Now she sweeps us away to the pageantry of medieval England, where a strong-willed knight must fight the battle of his life to win a stubborn lady. Lady Soria Beatrice Rosalynde Anne Therese Howard has had as many suitors as she has names. But she's spurned every last one of them, to the dismay of her guardian, King Edward I. Now, even increasing her dower prize will not lure offers for the defiant, but lonely, Sofia, whose young heart was once broken by a too-arrogant knight. Sir Tobin de Clare is the man who broke her heart, and he must make amends for a careless act from the past. Nothing will stop this ruthless warrior from winning her hand. Nothing, that is, except Sofia's tattered pride and her demand that he also surrender his heart. In a rousing battle of will and wit that makes war seem peaceful, one powerfully determined knight and his spirited lady find that love at first sight is never, ever easy.

Setting: Medieval England
Sensuality: 7

Lady Sofia Howard is richly dowered and the ward of her powerful cousin, King Edward of England. Willful, independent, and full of mischief, she foils every attempt the king makes to betroth her to an acceptable nobleman. But at age 12, Sofia falls head over heels in love when she looks across a sea of people at a fair and into the eyes of a handsome knight, Sir Tobin de Clare. Over the next several years, Sofia and Tobin are thrown together on occasion; given Sofia's stubborn nature and Tobin's arrogance, it's not surprising that their acquaintance is stormy.

But no one could have predicted the fireworks that erupt when King Edward betroths Sofia to Tobin without her knowledge or consent. While there is no denying the passion that blazes between them, Sofia wonders if she'll ever really know the hard-edged knight. At the same time, Tobin struggles to come to terms with the depth of his feelings for his impossible wife. Each has emotional scars from their childhood and Sofia needs to know that she is loved by Tobin for herself alone and not for just her rich dower. And when fate intervenes with war, hostages, and duty to his king, the arrogant Tobin may make one wrong decision too many and lose Sofia forever.

Set against the backdrop of medieval England with all its pageantry, pomp, danger, and strife, Wicked is the story of two passionate, prideful people as they struggle to find a way to live and love together. Following Sofia and Tobin as they evolve from youthful sweethearts, embark on the heart-wrenching seas of matrimony as newlyweds, and at last reap the rewards of a deep and abiding love is a wonderful journey. Don't miss this third tale in Barnett's medieval trilogy that began with Wonderful and Wild.--Lois Faye Dyer

5 out of 5 starsMy All Time Favorite Book!!!!!, 2007-02-21
Laughter....yes! Excitement....yes! Romance.....yes! Passion....yes! Great characters.....yes! Good plot......yes! Fairy tale ending....yes!

There is absolutely nothing this book lacks. Jill Barnett is my favorite author and if you read this book you will see why! Both Sophia and Sir Tobin are extremely dynamic characters that butt heads throughtout this book. Sophia is very stubborn but also extremely sensitive. She is labeled the "ice queen" because she is afraid to let anyone hurt her. Tobin is able to see past that facade to the wonderful woman she really is. Tobin is also very stubborn, though, and that is where the sparks fly. His pride leaves her waiting for a rondevoux that he never intended to make and she finds out. At that moment you truly felt her pain and Tobin's shame. They clash many times over the years, until finally, the King is tired of her antics and forces her to marry against her will, to no other, than the man that broke her heart. From there, everything goes topsy turvy. Their unyielding pride, make for some hilarious and touching moments throughout this book. I have never felt so invested in the characters as I did with Sophia and Tobin. It sweeps you from one exciting moment to another, from a convent to a circus. Even the secondary characters are well developed but they never take anything away from the hero/heroine.

Jill Barnett has me laughing hysterically one moment and then crying my eyes out the next. It engages your emotions and you can't help cheering them on. You truly feel what the characters do. It has depth and the fairy tale ending that we all expect. I've read every single one of her books and this book comes back out every once in a while when I need a good laugh. No matter what order you read the trilogy, they are all complete books that can stand alone. A must read for all you romantics!!

This was the first Jill Barnett book I read. I was either smiling or laughing through the first half. This was more comedy than romance. It was hard for me to like Tobin after the wager he made at the beginning and I'm not sure if I ever got over it. It actually made me wonder why Sophia thought she loved him. He hadn't really done anything to deserve it. Arrogance is not a good reason to love someone. Even with the lack of romance I will definitely read more of Barnett's books.

4 out of 5 starsGreat way to wrap up the trilogy..., 2004-03-19
To say Lady Sophia Howard was stubborn would be an understatement. Sophia's mother had died trying to give birth to a male heir. Not bothering to say goodbye, her distraught father immediately rode into battle and was mortally wounded. The spirited, willful and distrusting Sophia then became the ward of her cousin, King Edward I of England. Once she reached womanhood, Edward began thrusting a stream of suitors at the heavily dowered Sophia, but she had rejected every one of them. Then she met a handsome, arrogant knight at a festival, Sir Tobin de Clare. But Tobin had ulterior motives for pursuing her that had nothing to do with her dowry. Ultimately, he and his game left her with a broken heart. But Sir Tobin realized Sophia was the one woman he wanted as a wife, and would stop at nothing to claim her. When Edward announces her betrothal to Tobin without her consent, she's less than thrilled. The battle lines are drawn, but Sophia may have met her match in this war of wills.

"Wicked" is the conclusion to the "Wonderful" and " Wild" trilogy. I have unfortunately been reading these backwards, so I still need to read "Wonderful". This selection is also full of Ms. Barnett's trademark humor. I believe the battle of wills between Sophia and Tobin is the best part of this book. They're both very strong characters, and they each hold their own throughout this story. I gave this book four, instead of five stars, because while it's very good, I did prefer "Wild" and a couple of her other books over this one. By no means should that discourage you from reading this story, it's worth the time. Jill Barnett is a favorite author of mine, and she never fails to deliver to her readers. If her name is on it, you know it's good!

4 out of 5 starsA well written worthwhile read....., 2003-07-01
"Wicked" was my first book by Jill Barnett..I think it is safe to say it wont be my last. I enjoyed this story very much. I loved the moment when the H/H first met. Sophia was a great character. She was very well drawn. So much so that I felt a bit cheated when it came to Tobin..I would have liked to have gotten to know him a bit better. My other quibble with this book has to do with the frequent separations...one was rather long..I REALLY dislike that in a romance...this wasnt a keeper for me, but definitely a book that Id recommend reading.

4 out of 5 starsA wonderful job of storytelling., 2002-09-02
The thing that most makes a book memorable for me is great storytelling. I loved the style in which this book is written. It is a fresh perspective on the usual romance story. It opens with Lady Sofia remembering, opening a journal that triggers her thoughts regarding the often tumultuous love affair between herself and Tobin.

Lady Sofia is the ward of King Edward, well-dowered out of necessity. She is a wily, often sharp-tongued spirited girl who foils his efforts to have her wed. She falls in love with Sir Tobin, truly almost at first sight, although she is far too proud and willful to admit it. A cruel jest on Sir Tobin's part places them at odds and what ensues is a classic love-hate relationship.

All-in-all, I enjoyed this book. There are some parts that were a little silly and some of the plot twists to build up suspense seemed a little contrite and melodramatic. But as a whole, it is a good romance with humor, and as stated, told in a wonderful perspective.
