Book Description

She had bewitched the most serious, snobbish, and handsome Duke in England. Joyous MacQuarrie...the pixie-like, green-eyed beauty had appeared from nowhere and fell unashamedly into his arms. And all that his society friends knew of the mysterious lady was that she was Scottish and that her grandmother had been a Locksley. Even her fine bloodline didn't make Joy quite proper enough to be a Duchess, but a proud nobleman like Alec, Duke of Belmore, did as he pleased...and he wanted to marry the beautiful girl who aroused his desire.

But Alec soon discovered he could not do what he pleased with Joy Fiona MacQuarrie. Bubbling with laughter, filled with spirit, she turned stately Belmore Park upside down with merriment and strange occurrences. She might even have gotten Alec to laugh -- and to cherish her -- if it had not been for the truth she hid. Though he turned to fire when he tasted her petal-soft lips, he turned to ice when he discovered that this winsome lady was, in fact, a witch. A witch whose powers of white magic were not always perfectly under control....Too late, Joy knew she was desperately in love and that nothing could stop the course of their destiny -- the scandal threatening to destroy her and the passion that held them both spellbound in a forbidden, irresistible match of two enchanted hearts.

2 out of 5 starsUnless you REALLY like fantasy in your Regency read..., 2008-09-04
...then I would recommend skipping this one.

Alec is cruel, selfish and unfeeling to Joyous for about the first 90% of the book. Yes, there are a few occasions of a kind deed on his part but overall his behavior is close to reprehensible. This is why it was difficult for me to enjoy his change of heart at the very end of the story.

As for Joyous, well, I can't say that I blame Alec for all of his shortcomings related to her. She simpers, bumbles, and "disobeys" Alec whenever possible. I suppose some people would find her character charming, innocent, refreshing, etc. I did not.

One usually expects a bit of tension between the protagonists and a build up to the big, happy ending in this genre but Bewitching was so drawn out I lost interest about half way through.

3 out of 5 starsC+, Cute, 2008-07-06
If I were a fan of historical novels, this would have gotten bumped up a grade.

It's very cute. The story is adorable. The plot line is different than most of what I come across.

Jill, the protagonist is a bubbly, innocent, spitfire. Alec is a brooding, practical, nobleman.

Throw in few humorous episodes and you get this.

Would have been funnier had she accidentally exploded some elves. But I digress. That's just my twisted side.

Cute, historical novel.

5 out of 5 starsA magical historical romance!, 2008-04-30
Bewitching is a lovely book. Joyous, bubbly, funny and magical just like its heroine Joyous MacQuarrie. Joyous is almost typical regency heroine; naive, a little accident prone, sentimental and worships her powerful, proper, rigid husband Alec who also happens to be a duke and incredibly cautious of his public image as a peer of the realm. If only that was the story, this novel would be no different that any other historical romance. But, in this story there is a slight twist: Joyous is a witch and a clumsy one to boot. Of course she tries to hide her abilities from Alec, unfortunately though things get out of hand and not only Alec but the whole household will soon realize what's going on. Alec, who has always hated scandal, tries desperately to keep the fact hidden from everyone and to keep his heart safe as well although both battles seem rather lost.
This is a lovely book, highly entertaining, and more humorous than your average historical romance (not Lyndsay Sands' kind of funny, just humorous mind you). I am more into dark, passionate and heart ripping tales but I enjoyed this one extremely. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 starsA Magical story!, 2007-11-04
An absolutely enchanting tale and filled with humour! Magical chemistry between the H/H.
When the handsome but ice-cold duke meets the warm-hearted and beautiful Joy, sparks do fly, or should I say rose petals!!!
Read it and find out.
And the secondary characters are entertaining, especially the Earl of Downe and the klutzy but sweet Letitia.
Loved this tale. For me, this is a keeper.

You can read about the Earl of Downe and Letitia, in their own story titled 'Dreaming'.

3 out of 5 starsHopeless heroine, horrid hero, 2007-05-10
Our heroine, the Scottish witch Joyous MacQuarrie, is a loser at everything she attempts. She stinks at witchcraft, can't cast a spell to save her life. And I found her pathetic. Whoopee she was an eternal optimist that smiled a lot. But I kind of thought of a fool everytime I pictured her. A silly, "Ramling Rose" kind of fool. I became very frustrated that she was good at nothing and no job she ever attempted worked out right. The Duke of Belmore was nothing I would have fallen in love with either that's for sure.
In the end, Stephen saved the story. Somehow his reveal saved the tale.
The lovestory itself ended predictably, but satisfyingly.
I think overall this protagonist just wasn't my cup of tea.
I will heartily applaud Barnett for the pink roses thing, Beezle (hated the hair eating tho), tree-hugging, and the dancing statues on the roof. Wonderful!
