Product Description
Only sixteen when she discovers that her mother is a spy for the South during the Civil War, Viola Ross desperately tries to conceal her family's dark secret at the end of the conflict she must marry the one man in town who knows - Edward Ross, a drunkard who soon uproots Viola and takes her out West in search of gold. When Edward is tragically killed, Viola survives the best way she can, and ends up becoming partner with another widow in a laundry and dressmaking business, barely making ends meet. When her partner deserts her and her husband's debts threaten to destroy her, Viola offers William Donovan - a self-made Irish man - a deal he can't resist. She offers to be his personal mistress for three months; in return, Donovan agrees to house and feed her, which allows Viola to turn down the advances of Paul Lennox, a treacherous man whom she loathes. As Viola and William start to trust each other - much to both of their surprise - things heat up as Lennox plots to kidnap Viola. But will the growing bond between Viola and her Irish devil prove strong enough to overcome the dangerous circumstances that are headed their way?

1 out of 5 starsToo much ick factor for me, 2008-09-15
I enjoy sex in my romances but this was just way over the top for me, to the point of quickly skipping past descriptions of really raunchy acts I don't want to imagine anyone doing! I couldn't finish it but I actually did like Viola and William and I thought it could have been a marvelous book with less story interruptions for sex. It seemed as if whenever the historical aspect of it picked up, the momentum was lost for sex. I started realize this book wasn't going to be what I thought when the author visited William's past and that story too, had something sexual plugged into it. I just wanted to yell "enough already!"

This book reminded of me a vampire romance I read by a popular author where nary a chapter went by without some sex reference, even in the most mundane of acts, like the heroine drinking water with her big sexy bee stung lips :) I guess I don't appreciate the more-sex/less-story books.
And weren't these eroticas separated from the general romantic fiction or did I miss something?

2 out of 5 stars2.5 stars, ordinary story, no new ideas, nothing really grabbed me., 2008-08-31
There were a lot of erotic sex scenes with bondage and current day sex toys. Don't look for historical accuracy. That is not the purpose of this book. Other than the sex scenes, the plot and events were predictable and similar to a typical romance novel. It was ok, but I wasn't surprised or delighted.

Story brief: Viola came from a wealthy family. Her father disowned her when she married Edward. Edward brought her to a small mining town in Arizona. He was killed and Viola washes clothes to make a living. Paul is the local rich man who owns most of the town. He arranges for someone to take all of her possessions in hopes of forcing her to marry him. Viola goes to William and asks to become his mistress as a way to support herself. William agrees and she moves in with him immediately. Paul is furious and continues to be a threat.

Sexual language: strong/erotic. Number of sex scenes: seventeen. Setting: 1871 small mining town Rio Piedras, Arizona. Copyright: 2004. Genre: erotic, western historical romance.

1 out of 5 starsNot an "Irish Devil" to Me!, 2008-05-29
Well, I was looking for something different to read. Saw the reviews for this book. Well, I am sorry to say the book just didn't do it for me. The book was boring and long winded. I will not try this author again.

2 out of 5 starsVery disappointed, 2008-05-22
I, too, purchased this because of the glowing reviews I read online, but it did not come close to living up to the hype. There is no romance in this book. The heroine is a plaything for all kinds of kink for the hero, but it is written as merely an exchange of fluids, not emotion. I found I didn't care whether the couple lived happily ever after because Whiteside didn't give me any reason to. Very little depth to the characters, but the villain was a bit more fleshed out than the leads and that is why I gave it two stars instead of one. If you want to read it for the sex, try to find it at the library or used book store. You may adore it, but if you don't you wouldn't have wasted as much money as I did.

2 out of 5 starsDon't . . . Don't Do It!, 2007-11-17
A western with erotic flavor. Yum! Great raves! Ok, big-time yum! When a reviewer gives a book a top rating, to me that means: he or she considers it one of the best stories ever written! Diane Whiteside's THE IRISH DEVIL received some very high ratings on the net. Good grief! Did I miss something? Because I thought, THE IRISH DEVIL was a gigantic letdown!

Mini Synopsis:
William Donovan owns a flourishing frontier freight company in Rio Piedras, Arizona. Despite all the success, Donovan remembers exactly where he came from! He was an Irish orphan; whereupon he landed a job as a groom and finally became the star pupil in Lady Irene's school of sex!

The lovely Viola Ross attracted William Donovan. In his deepest fantasies, Viola was his silver-blonde "faerie queen." Backed into a corner, Viola turns to William for help. Her proposal: his protection for her willingness -- as his enthusiastic mistress!

Reviewer's Comments:
Hullo Irish! The innocent faerie queen meets the star sex pupil! Soon sex rules the pages in domination and submission. The dominator teacher is William and his student (wimp) -- Viola! And just like that, the heroine went from a feisty frontier woman to a simpering blusher in the blink of an eye! And what's more, THE IRISH DEVIL went from great to dreadful, the VERY minute Whiteside's lovers hooked up!

The continual use of "Mr. Donovan please," "Yes, sir," AND all that "unfeeling sex" caused THE IRISH DEVIL to simply wear out. Erotic sex scenes can be fun (in moderation) but the festivity must be controlled! In a romance story, sex IS great, but plot development is even better!

THE IRISH DEVIL started out with such great promise, but after finishing I am convinced Diane Whiteside wasted her writing talent . . .!
