Extremely dreadful, 2008-08-13
Judging by the reviews here, I'm definitely in the tiny minority of readers who didn't like this book. I didn't just dislike it; I thought it was a dreadful mess. Deplorable writing, completely implausible characters, embarrassing dialog. I sometimes wish books were labeled on the back cover somewhere, so you had a general idea of what you were buying before you buy it. This book may fall into the erotic-suspense category, but I would consider it porn extremely loosely disguised as suspense. It reminds me of a horny college student's first attempt at writing erotica, and failing miserably. It started out somewhat promising. While the introduction to Becca's character struck a wrong nerve with me (she comes off as somewhat of a ditz), Nick's introduction was interesting. But it fell apart after about 10 pages. Or namely, when I came to the ridiculous scene where Nick catches Becca skinny dipping. I guess I can only dispense with disbelief just so far, because I found it completely unbelievable, and somewhat revolting, that after being manhandled out of the pool naked, handcuffed and roughed up a bit, Becca finds herself having lustful thoughts for Nick. Excuse me? A woman frightened completely out of her mind suddenly wants to get it on with the stranger who could be a rapist, a murderer, or both? It goes downhill from there, when she's suddenly mixed up with some really bad Russian guys, finds herself in the role of gourmet chef for a bunch of psychotic Russians while wearing the skimpiest, most cliched outfit imaginable. And, of course, is sexually harassed by them. Though, given her immediate response to Nick, I'm surprised she wasn't turned on by the Russian creeps as well. I made it through about 30 pages before I threw the book in the trash, completely disgusted. It wasn't even worth the time/effort to try and pawn the book off on a local used bookstore. (Thankfully, I only paid 50 cents for it in the bargain bin at my local library.) Though not my favorite genre, I have read some good erotic-suspense books. This book doesn't come close. It actually left me wondering if publishers will publish anything these days.

Absolutely wonderful!, 2008-06-07
Shannon McKenna's books are so good. This one is not desapointing. It's one of those books that you read in one sitting and when you're finished you wish there were another two hundred pages left. At least.
I can't wait for the next one.

If you can get past the beginning..., 2008-06-04
I'm a big fan of McKenna's McCloud Brothers series (this is number 5). I eagerly awaited this release, knowing it would be about Nick. Yes, it's getting a little formulaic by now (meet under dangerous conditions, fall in love, all hell breaks loose, he/she loses faith in him/her, all's lost, but wait...OMG happily ever after!!!), but I honestly didn't care that much. McKenna's writing style is intelligent, literate, and erotic. I care about her characters and she brings their emotions vividly to life. Erotic fiction can be a tough genre to navigate, and I trust McKenna to deliver.

This said, I was disappointed by the beginning of the book. I always look forward to that first electric encounter where the main characters grab each other by the hair and have at it. In this case, a simulated rape occurs first, and then McKenna pushes us straight into that ever-important first-sex. McKenna's so good (too good) at showing us Becca's emotions, and I was too upset over the "rape" to enjoy the ensuing sexual encounter. I know some entertain rape fantasies (so it may not bother everyone), but I found it a buzz-kill.

The book has a very EVIL villain, and his sins involve the exploitation (but not rape) of children. McKenna's great at creating really awful, dimensional villains for our heroes to battle, but I can see how this particular storyline might make some folks overly upset.

"Extreme Danger" earns four stars when compared to the erotic romance genre as a whole, but it's only a three-star for McKenna. If you're interested in the McCloud story arc, you'll definitely want to read it. If not, read McKenna's "Hot Night" (or stop stalling and read "Behind Closed Doors" - I'm glad I did!).

An Absolute Wizard of Plot and Character!! , 2008-05-30
This novel starts out in the most improbable way but before the third chapter I'm in all the way for the ride. The characters are clearly and beautifully drawn. I especially thought the male lead was one of the best characters this author has created. His loss of the simple ability to laugh or smile, let alone enjoy more sensual pleasures was touching and believable. As always, I have a little more trouble with the female characters--I for one would never go skinny dipping in the middle of the night in a strange house--but then, when IS a good time to skinny dip, hmmm? I hate the visciousness of the villians, but that seems to be a trademark, so I accept the good with the bad. Luscious and involving read, well worth the trade paperback price.

I loved all her other books but this one was just way too brutal for my taste.
