Great for learning how to sew, 2009-01-08 This is a great book for beginners like me. I purchased a basic sewing machine for myself a few weeks ago but I had no one to teach me how to use it. After reading some reviews, I decided to purchase this book to help me figure everything out. The book is great because it does a wonderful job in explaining how to use all the basic sewing machine parts and stitches, recommends what notions and tools a person should have in their sewing basket, and includes simple yet modern beginner project ideas. I've been sewing for a total of three days now and I have successfully made a sewing machine cover, a pincushion, and a pillow case. The book is definitely worth having as a reference if you're new to sewing.

SO good for the absolute beginner!, 2009-01-03 I got my first sewing machine recently and have been trying to figure it out based on the manual, websites, and youtube how-to videos. NOTHING was detailed enough- not the drawings, the videos, or the text. People seem to assume you already know which direction a bobbin should go, or exactly where the thread is going when they say, "then through here and under here" as they thread a machine at the speed of light. I have no sewing friends and can't take a class for a few weeks, so I went to my local used bookstore to pick up a Sewing for Morons book. After sorting through all the New and Used books, I found myself poring over this one, taking notes and trying to memorize things. It was new and like 3 times more than I was planning on spending, but was SO MUCH BETTER than any other book that I realized I had get it, price be damned.
Rupp has bright color photographs, detailed diagrams, and really indepth explanations of sewing minutiae - all the stuff I'm sure I would have gotten from a class, or a crafty friend looking over my shoulder, but could not find from any book or site. After weeks of ruining cloth scraps, I happily wound bobbins, pinned cloth, and made my first little pillowcase last night! It even looks like it's supposed to. I've only had this book 24 hours, but I've already learned more than I have in the last 2 weeks. That said, I do wish I was more patient and could have gotten it from Amazon for less (it was almost 30 bucks), and the patterns it comes with look pretty lame to me (I'm not aiming to make my own clothes, and the garments she has are certainly not inspiring me), but I have not seen a better designed guide for the novice sewer than this book. So happy I have it!

Best Novice Sewing Book, 2008-12-30 I'm a novice sewer with bigtime aspirations, so sometimes I pick up a pattern with terms or directions I've never seen and therefore don't quite understand. This book is always there to guide me and has the answers I need to complete my shoot-for-the-moon projects. If you want to start small (which is always recommended!), she includes the perfect little projects to get you going and build sewing confidence/mastery.
At any rate, it's a staple in my craft room and has a permanent home next to my sewing machine. I even bought one as a Christmas gift for a friend learning to sew!

Great for the complete newbie, 2008-12-29 I bought this book initially because I thought it was a great deal as it comes with 10 patterns. After having read it and even made a couple of the projects, I know I made the right choice. The text is very easy to read and easy to understand for the complete beginner. The patterns are rated in terms of difficulty. I chose to do the tote bag as my first project and could not be happier with the results. That first project gave me some much needed confidence as a sewist. I use this book as a reference tool now. I would recommend this book to any complete novice. After reading it you will have all the basic sewing knowledge you need.

excellent book. not too advanced for begineers., 2008-12-25 After reading many reviews, I bought this book and Sew Fast, So Easy. It seemed like a good combo since I don't know anything about sewing and this book seemed a bit advanced. It's packed with information but detailed enough to be the go to book for a beginner. I wish I could return Sew Fast, So Easy. There is just so much more in this book. I was threading my machine last week and I didn't know what was wrong. This book has a short blurb on drop-in bobbins that mentioned the thread had to go clockwise. Even my Janome sewing machine's manual didn't bother to specify and the picture didn't make it clear that it was clockwise. I'm very impressed with the author and look forward to reading her other books.
