Maybe it isn't Brilliant, but it is so much FUN!, 2008-12-31 I just finished the sixth book of this series this morning. I am the first to admit that I love cheesy things, and I absolutely loved these books. I wasn't looking for deep meaning when I picked up these books. I was looking for entertainment, and that is what I got. Don't read these if you want to appear super intelligent or deep, that isn't the point. If you want to day dream and have your imagination stirred I think these books are just the thing. Be prepared when you try to explain to people about the book. They often tilt their heads, not understanding that it is all just for fun.

Made more sense in Oz..., 2008-10-13 I read these series when first released in Australia, back in 98 when I was 13. They were the first fantasy books I ever read, and introduced me to my love, and sometimes obsession, with this genre of fiction.
They were released as 2 seperate series, The Battleaxe Trilogy and the Wayfarer Redemption, 3 books each, first book entitled Battleaxe.
The Battleaxe Trilogy was a light, easy read, enjoyable if you don't read too much into it, and you don't expect to take alot of deep and meaningful away with you after reading it. They are still some of my favourite books, and I have read many hundreds of fantasy books in the last 10 years. The characters are lovable, and you care what happens to them. The author doesn't question your sense of right and wrong, good and evil, and the thin line between them. There is a definitive line right down the middle, and that what makes The Battleaxe Trilogy the easiest fanatasy books to read... there not there to make you think, they are there for you to enjoy.
The Wayfarer Redemption - a little darker, but saying that, the line between black and white that was in The Battleaxe Trilogy, it is a glaring, 10-inch thick one in these books, but the essence of it is the same: not there to make you think, they are there for you to enjoy. And I did thoughourly enjoy them!

I'm sold., 2008-07-14 .The Wayfarer Redemption (The Axis Trilogy, Bk 1)
First of all, let me make it clear that this review is for the entire Axis Trilogy and not just the first book.
Okay. So this story took a while to get me. I didn't care for the introduction at all and was immediately worried about the story. The Wayfarer Redemption starts off slow, but I expect that of good fantasy stories. I didn't care for the main character at first, either. My first impression of him was that he was your stereotypical romance hero. He was a ferocious warrior, but he had a soft, vulnerable side that made him irresistable to women. I also thought that his characterization was a little unimaginative. He's Axis, the Battleaxe of the Axe-Wielders. I think that if he was born in Axington, which sat on the banks of Axion River at the foot of the Axeblade Mountains in the country of Axelus, I would have closed the first book and never picked it up again. But nothing of that sort happened, and it never lost my interest.
The truth is that this story is so packed with action and intrigue and so many mysteries to be solved that I found myself turning the pages feverishly. The lands in which this story takes place are described so crisply and cleanly that you feel as though you're standing in the fields watching the action unfold right before you. And although I didn't like the main character until the last book, the other characters in the story are so interesting and well-developed, that I loved the good guys and despised the bad guys as opposed to being indifferent to them all as it is in so many other books.
A warning to readers. There are many parts in this story that are hard to read. There are some gruesome deaths and some very mature subject matter, so if you're reading this review and considering this book for your younger reader, I would recommend that you keep looking. This book is clearly for older readers. Also, if you are the type of person who can hate a book for its editing failures, you should also keep looking. Especially in the third book, ("Starman"), there are many periods that should be there that aren't, and some that shouldn't be there that are. There are misspellings and words that are put in that should be other words, (e.g. "of" for "or").
If you're wanting to read a fantasy for something different, or if this is your introduction to the fantasy genre, I don't recommend it. Read something more along the lines of R.A. Salvatore, or Tad Williams, or Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, or J.R.R. Tolkien. But, if you are a diehard fantasy fan as I am, you would do well to check it out. It makes for a good story to read in between the genre classics.

Starts strong, finishes poor, 2008-06-30 I thoroughly enjoyed the first 1/3 of this book. I was intrigued by the story and the characters and was looking forward to what came next. Unfortunately, the book fell flat mid-way through and never fully recovered. I kept reading, and I will give the next book in the series a try, but it is going to have to improve to hold my interest.
Other reviewers have commented on the ridiculous names and strange capitalization. I can get over the capitilization (although I don't understand why the author chose to do this) but some of the names of characters are downright silly. The names of the Icharii are supposed to call bird imagery to mind. That's fine. But PerchSure HoldFast?? Are you kidding me? I am almost embarrassed to admit that I read a book with a character named PerchSure HoldFast. The dorky names are almost enough to stop me after book one.
My biggest complaint with the book is the lack of well drawn characters. Axis and Faraday got off to a good start, but ultimately they became stock characters with absolutely nothing to set them apart. Faraday and Azhure could be the same person. The women are too perfect. They don't seem real and they aren't interesting. No depth. The dialogue is flat and unimaginative. The characters have a habit of explaining too much, too soon.
I will continue because I think the premise is interesting and I want to see where it goes. But I am only giving 3 stars to show my displeasure of the flat characters and the silly names.

Solid start to the series, 2008-01-06 Wayfarer Redemption by Sara Douglass is the first book in the Wayfarer Redemption series. The second book is titled Enchanter. I came to this book and series in a rather unique way. I first stumbled across Ms. Douglass' books by reading a book titled Beyond the Hanging Wall, which evidently is set in the same world just on a totally different part. I then discovered a whole complete series already written and immediately sought it out. Being that I had already read a previous book by Ms. Douglass, I had a good idea of what to expect I would actually suggest other follow the same course. That way if you do not like Beyond the Hanging Wall because of how Ms. Douglass writes then you have only invested in time reading a stand-alone novel and not started a series.
The plot of this book is very deep and encompasses several characters and ideas throughout the book. There is a political element to novel, however it is not the typical - someone looking at taking over the kingdom - type storyline. Rather, it's someone suffering from some jealously, but also trying to do the right thing for the greater good. An interesting dynamic. There is also a thousand year old prophecy that comes into play. However, who the players are and what the prophecy actually means is something that has yet to be determined. There is the journey of self-discovery by a character as she progresses through the novel. Additionally, another journey of self-discovery by the Battleaxe himself. Of course, there is also a love interest tossed in for good measure. All of these plot points, and character arcs are packed into this novel. However, I never felt that there was too much included in this novel. Some books try too cram too much into the book and the plot becomes stagnant. Yet, this novel's pacing and flow aided the plot lines tremendously. It was seamless and a joy to read.
The characters in this novel, and there are plenty, are well written and each has his or her own unique voice in the novel. Characters such as Faraday, who start off rather bland but finishes the novel a very deep and interesting character. The same holds true for Axis, the Battleaxe of the Axe-Wielders. At the start of the novel he seems rather one dimensional but by the middle of the book has evolved into a great character. There are several other characters in this book, but in the interest of time, I will let you discover them on your own. I will say this though, this may be the book where I have seen the most character development scattered across multiple characters. There are no less than four characters who develop considerably and countless other characters who have some form of character development at well. It's always a joy to read a novel with a solid story and plot line mixed with well developed characters, which is just what I found here.
I do have a couple criticisms with this novel however.
For starters the first twenty to thirty pages of the book seemed to really drag for me. If I had not read Beyond the Hanging Wall prior to this book I am not sure just how long I would have stuck it out. Yet, with that previous book under my belt I had faith the book would get better, and it did.
My second criticism is the love interest. While I understand it, to me the whole thing seemed forced. There were also points when it was being discussed that the character dialogue and decisions based on it, seemed just wrong. It just left me scratching my head. I am sure it will prove to be a major plot point later in the series, yet how it started in this novel leaves a little to be desired.
With all that said, I think this novel still boils down to a very good read for most fantasy fans. There is a great deal of character development, there are large scale battles, political underpinnings, and just an all around good story. I firmly believe most fantasy fans will find something to enjoy in this book. Being that it is book one of the series there is some degree of setup but not as much as I expected. I can easily see myself recommending this book to other fans who are looking for a good start of a series. I am eagerly looking forward to delving deeper into this series.
