Product Description
In The Heart of the Buddha's Teaching, Thich Nhat Hanh introduces us to the core teachings of Buddhism and shows us that the Buddha's teachings are accessible and applicable to our daily lives. With poetry and clarity, Nhat Hanh imparts comforting wisdom about the nature of suffering and its role in creating compassion, love, and joy--all qualities of enlightenment. Covering such significant teachings as the Four Noble Truths, the Noble Eightfold Path, the Three Doors of Liberation, the Three Dharma Seals, and the Seven Factors of Awakening, The Heart of the Buddha's Teaching is a radiant beacon on Buddhist thought for the initiated and uninitiated alike.

Amazon.com Review
What should we think when on the one hand Buddhism tells us that life is suffering and on the other we are told to enjoy life's every moment? Loved around the world for his simple, straightforward explanations of Buddhism, Thich Nhat Hanh has finally turned his hand to the very core of Buddhism and conundrums such as this. In the traditional way, Thich Nhat Hanh takes up the core teachings one by one--the Four Noble Truths, the Noble Eightfold Path, the Twelve Links of Interdependent Co-Arising--but his approach is as fresh as a soft breeze through a plum orchard. For illustration, he dips into the vast stores of Buddhist literature right alongside contemporary anecdotes, pointing out subtleties that can get glossed over in other popular introductions. He also includes three short but key sutras, essential source teachings from which all Buddhism flows. Studying the basics of Buddhism under Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh is like learning basketball from Michael Jordan. --Brian Bruya

5 out of 5 starsIncredible Introduction, 2008-12-22
If you are new to Buddhism, and want to know "what is this all about?", I can think of no finer book than this. It covers all the basic concepts, in a natural, and intuitive way. It thankfully avoids arguing over sectarian subtleties, and shows patience and care for the reader, assuming that this might be their first book on the subject. It relegates nothing to dogma or belief, instead explaining the plain truth present in the Buddha's teachings, in a way that rings obviously true to human beings in general.

5 out of 5 starsPerfect In Depth Intro to Buddhism, 2008-11-13
Thich Naht Hanh is such an eloquent writer. This was my first introduction to him as an author. I love this book. It is a staple in my collection of Buddhism texts and I find myself refering to it continuously.

This is an in depth introduction to Buddhism, including The Four Nobel Truths, The Eightfold Path and so much more. It is very in depth, but the writing style makes it so easy to read and absorb.

I recommend this to anyone interested in Buddhism and the ceasation of suffering.

5 out of 5 starsA Great Intro to Buddhism, 2008-06-26
"The Heart of Buddha's Teaching" is one of the best books I've read. It's a great introduction to the basic principals and ideas of Buddhism. Thich Nhat Hanh really explained things in such a way that I feel I'm walking away with ideas and resources to help deal with everyday problems.

I'm tempted to call this a self-help book with how every chapter seemed to address things that I as a person am confronted with and am trying to understand. How Hanh applies Buddha's teaching to suffering, anger and how to achieve peace and zen is something I believe everyone needs and will benefit from reading. I've read other books that felt as if they were speaking of things beyond my grasp and ability to make sense of; this was not that book. Everything flowed nicely, the concepts were presented in terms that weren't too complicated, the examples given were ones that did not distract from the ideas and points.

Definitely a must read and worth your time and attention.

This is one of the best, most intelligent and broad introductions to buddhism and buddhist philosophy available. An important addition to your library.

5 out of 5 starsExcellent! A clear and plain introduction of Buddhism, 2008-04-25
This book did a great job to introduce Buddhism ideas in a clear and plain way, which makes Buddhism easy to be understood and easy to be accepted. Moreover, I'm also glad that he wouldn't simply follow whatever in the Buddhism texture without reflection, like most Buddhist scholars did. He reflected the ideas, explaining them reasonably and even asked readers to think, reflect and then see if they could accept or not...The author himself is a peaceful and great figure in modern Buddhism society. The experience of reading his book always brings me a peaceful mind. If you're interested in Buddhism but hesitate for its complicated terminology, this book is highly recommended.
