Product Description Four years ago... Skye Kellerman was attacked in her own bed. She managed to fend off her knife-wielding assailant, but the trauma changed everything about her life. As a result of that night, she joined two friends--also survivors--in starting The Last Stand, an organization to help victims of crime. But now... Her would-be rapist is getting out of prison. Skye knows that Dr. Oliver Burke hasn t forgotten that her testimony cost him his reputation--and his freedom. Sacramento detective David Willis, who investigated her case, believes Burke is a clear and present danger--and guilty of at least two unsolved murders. And now Burke is free to terrorize Skye again. Unless David can stop him. Unless Skye can fight back. Because Oliver Burke has every intention of finishing what he started. And that s a promise. Trust me.

Not bad..., 2008-11-16 Even though this book isn't grade-A amazing, it had no problem keeping my attention. Interesting enough to keep me reading but not so much so to keep me up all night, it's a perfect beach read.
Four years ago, Sky Kellerman survived an attack by Dr. Oliver Burke and managed to put him behind bars. The attack changed her life, but she did get some good things out of it. It introduced her to detective David Willis and helped her start The Last Stand with her friends Jasmine and Sheridan, themselves victims of tragic circumstances. The Last Stand is an organization dedicated to helping people in dangerous circumstances. Sadly the fledgling organization is going much better than her seemingly doomed relationship with David. David is more than just infatuated with Skye, but his feeling of responsibility toward his son and sick ex-wife keep him from being with her. However his ex-wife is angry, embittered, and sick which makes it impossible to stay with her. And when the man who almost killed Skye getting out of prison, things are definitely heating up.
This was a very good start to a three part series by Brenda Novak featuring three women who rose up from their own tragedies to begin something amazing. I've read the second book and can't wait to start on the last one.

Just Okay - Lacking in Romance & Suspense, 2008-10-30 For a book that was classified as Romantic Suspense, I was unfortunately disappointed in both the romance and suspense departments.
I really liked the initial plot set-up, the main characters, and the complicated life dilemmas that the main characters and supporting ones were facing. However, as the story unfolded, I never got completely invested in the characters...
There were a number of reasons this probably happened, but I'll point out one that really jumped out at me. AT LEAST one third (maybe more) of this book unfold via phone conversations. Skye (the heroine) talks with David (the hero/cop) on the phone half a dozen times...Skye talks to both her best friends & her step-sister numerous times on the phone...Oliver (the villian) talks to wife on the phone...his wife talks to her lover on the phone...David talks to numerous witnesses/people connected to the case via the phone, etc. Many of these phone conversations went on for 6+ pages. That adds up to a lot of character interaction that doesn't involve eye contact, body language, touching, or anything action-oriented. For me, it made it dry and impersonal.
Nothing particularly suspenseful happened until after page 200. The first 200 pages were devoted primarily to the heroine and hero gathering evidence - unfortunately usually separately, not together. There wasn't the appeal of it being a mystery either. They always knew who the bad guy was. They were just out trying to interview people who knew the rapist/murderer and trying to find additional evidence to pin on him for a conviction, so it started to get a little boring...alot of question and answer sessions.
I really would have liked the hero and heroine to be together more often to build up the tension and romance.
I will avoid including any spoilers, but I was also disappointed by what I saw as pretty clique thing involving the ex-wife at the end. It felt like a cop-out to me to make things neat and tidy for the hero & heroine.
I'll finish with a few positive notes: Both the hero and the heroine are strong characters. Several of the supporting characters, including the villian's wife, had interesting and sympathetic sub-storylines. The pacing picked up for the last 150 pages of the book.
But all in all, it was just okay, and I won't be reading the next 2 in the trilogy.

Suspense filled, but lacking in romance, 2008-09-04 This is the first book I've read by Brenda Novak. It definitely will not be my last as I enjoy suspense/mystery novels. I also enjoy some romance with these type of novels and although there is some in this book, I felt a bit let down with the romance between David & Skye. I believed in their relationship and there was definitely enough sexual tension between the two; but, there was only one "quick" encounter between them and at the end of the book I was left thinking "this is it?"
The suspense in the book however is really good. Although you know who the main killer is already, you read about his obsession with Skye throughout the book. You also become familiar with his family and what they have been put through. Plus, there is an extra little who done it twist that personally shocked me.
I can't wait to read the next book, Stop Me and the finally her last in this trilogy, Watch Me.
