5 out of 5 starsSaved my butt..., 2009-05-30
I had a day to study for the final MS1 biostats exam. I had attended almost none of the classes, and had not taken stats in undergrad. I needed an overview that could explain the concepts of this tricky subject to me in a matter of hours.

Well this book did just that. Unlike the large, complex biostats textbooks my friends picked up a few days before the test (and couldn't finish) it is very short, very readable, and emphasizes only the points you need to understand. It has a great symbol index as well as a good terminology index.

This is the first High yield book I have purchased, and I have come away highly impressed.

5 out of 5 starsAmazing resource for Step 1, 2009-05-18
Excellent and concise Step 1 review of biostatistics. The questions at the end are excellent indicators in measuring your grasp of the information. It is a book that you can hit hard for a day or two of Step 1 studying and feel confident that you know your stuff well. Thumbs up to Dr. Glaser. Keep up the good work!

5 out of 5 starsExcellent review of the basics, 2009-04-26
I should first clarify that I read this book for personal interest, not as a medical student, so I'm not really part of the target audience.

I was attracted to the book because of the "high-yield" part of the title. I was seeking a book which very concisely and clearly lays out the key ideas of biostatistics, without getting bogged down by overexplanation or esoteric details, and I wasn't disappointed.

Just beware of two limitations inherent in a book like this. First, since this is a concise review book, you need to have a basic comfort level with math in order to learn from it. Second, the focus is on the basics, so the book doesn't cover all of the statistics you'll encounter when reading biomedical literature.

However, within the scope of these limitations, this is certainly an excellent book which I can recommend.

4 out of 5 starsExcellent Resource For The USMLE, 2008-08-05
Let's face it, you need to know Biostatistics/Epidemiology to do well on the USMLE and this book is just what most students need, to know the concepts that are repeatedly tested on the exam. I'd recommend this book to anyone. I only give it 4 stars because the writing, at times, may get a little hard to understand.

5 out of 5 starsExtremely Board Specific, 2004-06-16
I first encountered this book when it was called "Biostatistics for the Boards" when I took the course from Dr. Glaser when he was teaching at the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine in 1990. Dr. Glaser was an exceptionally good and popular teacher and the book reflects his "no-nonsense" style. At first I thought it was a "dumbed down" statistics book as I had taken a full year of stats in college and my previous books had been huge and heavy textbooks. However, I soon found that the reason Dr. Glaser's book was so brief was that he concentrates only on the type of concepts and questions you will find on the USMLE step 1. The chapters are short and it is easy to review each one many times to firmly plant the info into long term memory. I had no problems at all with the stats on the USMLE. This book presents exactly what you need to answer all the questions on the USMLE without having you waste a lot of time studying things you will never use.
