Product Description
When Claude Steiner and the late Eric Berne developed the theory of Transactional Analysis, their basic belief that people were “born princes and princess, until their parents turned them into frogs” countered the fundamental principle of psychiatry which asserts that emotional and mental distress comes from within. This theory was further developed in Steiner’s book Games Alcoholics Play. Dr. Berne, in What Do You Say After You Say Hello?, acknowledged Steiner’s important role in the analysis of “life scripts” which we choose at an early age and which rule every detail of our lives until our death.

In Scripts People Live, Steiner expands upon this belief to show that people are innately healthy but develop a pattern early in life based upon negative or positive influences of those around them.

4 out of 5 starsPleasantly surprised, 2008-05-22
i have to confess that I've not been a great fan of Transactional Analysis [TA] in the past, probably because a lot of TA practitioners had a certain evangelical fervor about them that conflicted with my 'tool box" approach to therapy ie no one approach will fit all. Having read this book I suspect that some of my reservations at least came from the popularization of TA [or dumbing down, depending on your mood at the time] via the works of Amy and Tom Harris in their book "I'm Ok your OK". Reading Steiner's book reminded me of the refreshingly no-conformist roots to Eric Berne's approach and left me feeling that his whole attitude and ethos is one we would be wise to rediscover. A very helpful explanation to the real contribution and value of Life Scripts as a framework for personal growth and development

5 out of 5 starsmail delivery of book -Scripts people live, 2008-02-09
The book arrived quickly, well packaged, brand new as described when I bought it. I am very satisfied with the purchase and the price paid.

This is an excellent book in Transactional Analysis that I know and read and studied many years ago. I highly recommend the reading of this book to anybody interested in theories of personality and wanting to know more about himself (or herself) and others.

3 out of 5 starsA Script from along time ago, 2007-09-02
My premise for reading this book is to understand the dynamic of drama. I was reading some material on angriesout.com and I was intrigued with how an individiual can discuss a subject matter having a viewpoint as the Hero, Victim, or Persecutor.

The introduction in this book reads like an autobio for Eric Berne and his psychoanalytical theories. It is appealing how the author has paid detail attention to how the book is presented. You can focus on sections of the book that you want to review. In otherwords, you do not have to read the complete book and duplicate reading material that you may already be familiar with. The book entails how the Parent, Child, and Adult Roles interacts based upon scripts or what you have learned in your environment as a youth or ect.

The book has a copyright of 1974 and 1990. I had to stop reading the book on page 180 in the chapter of Banal scripts of Women. I could not go on I could not relate to Plastic women which mentions that the "Mythical Heroine: She is fascinated by Doris Day .... amused by Phyllis Diller." These examples are decades old. I didn't want to continue reading something that in 2007 is not relevant for me.

5 out of 5 starsa must read for any parent, 2007-08-21
Scripts People Live is one of the best books I've ever read. I highly recommend it for anyone with children. This book teaches how to allow one's children to become the best they can be.

Parents are very good at training children to be joyless. Parents also teach their kids to be victims by reinforcing powerlessness. Parents limit their children's abilities to think for themselves. The parents I'm talking about are what we'd think of as normal, loving parents. They do so unwittingly; they do so erroneously believing they're doing the best for the child.

If you'd rather raise autonomous children who can experience joy, think for themselves, not have addictions, who can experience intimacy, and express their emotions, then this book is for you.

I read _I'm OK - You're OK_ first, and I found it gave me a very strong understanding of transactional analysis, making it easier to absorb the concepts of _Scripts People Live_ easier. This isn't required though as there is a summary of TA in the beginning of SPL.

Great book...a must read for anyone in a relationship with another human being.
