One of the loveliest stories I have ever read. , 2008-09-28
This is one of my favorite books of all. This book goes beyond storytelling and speaks deeply to the reader. I still pull it off my shelf to reread my favorite passages. This book has a lot of wisdom in it.

Not at all what I expected, 2008-09-19
I loved this book. It kept coming up with more surprises. It veered one when when I expected it to go another way. It's heartwarming and being Jewish, I was pleasantly surprised and saddened by the nature of Margaret's collection. Definitely two thumbs up!

Worth trying to 'get into', 2008-08-06
After trying the 3rd time to read this book, I can honestly say it is worth the slow start. It took me a while to become vested, but after that I laughed, I cried and I am thankful I gave the book a 3rd chance -- in hindsight it is a shame it took 3 tries.

Hard to put down, 2008-07-14
Having read many of the Today Show Book Club selections, I'm always excited to read another, as most have been fantastic! However, this story was a little odd for me at first. Luckily, the story only got better as pages flew by and as I neared the end I couldn't put the book down!

There are two main characters, Margaret who is 70-something and just diagnosed with cancer. She decides to step out of her comfort zone and shut-in lifestyle and take in a boarder as a story of last effort to make something meaningful of her life. What got me was that the first chapter started off talking about objects speaking to Margaret and I just didn't know what to make of that and how it was going to go. I got a sort of "Beauty and the Beast" feel and I was worried. However, that sort of simmered down and the story delved into aspects of both characters lives; past and present...relationships, family. Eventually we are introduced to more characters that take a larger role in the book and this adds to the sort of quirky story being told. The further I got into the book the more invested I became and at the end I thoroughly enjoyed the story. It was woven wonderfully- the lives and stories of these two women and the effects they have on each others lives. There were many beautiful passages, especially towards the end I found myself re-reading many and stopping to think about them.

Overall I was very impressed with this story! Bravo to Ms. Kallos!

Pretty good, kept my attention, 2008-04-23
For the most part I liked this book. The characters were endearing and it had that quality that keeps you wanting to know what's going to happen next. And some of the things that were built up with anticipation didn't happen the way you expected, which helped the book feel real and hilighted the theme of "don't wait until it's too late". My only complaint is that the climax descended into a little bit of self-indulgent cheesiness. Although it did bring a tear to my eye on the NY subway, it was a velveta tear. But then again, my boyfriend says I am never satisfied with the endings of books and movies, so maybe I just expect too much. Overall a good read and I would recommend it to all but the most discriminating and/or jaded readers.
