Editorial Reviews
Product Description
Here They Come is the lyrical, startling and poignant third novel from Yannick Murphy, a National Endowment for the Arts award winner and one of the freshest voices in American fiction today. Splitting time between a ramshackle apartment and a lonely hot dog vendor, the observant thirteen-year-old who stands steadily at the center of Here They Come gives lyrical voice to an unforgettable instant —1970s New York, stifling, violent and full of life. Balanced between her enigmatic siblings, detached parents, and a quiet sense of the surreal, she recounts a year of startling moments with dark humor and deadpan resilience.

4 out of 5 starsA Notable Memoir, 2008-06-26
I think Dustin Long's review sums up this book well. I'll let this notable author's enthusiastic remarks about this book stand without amendments from me.

I'm writing this note mainly to challenge a couple of the negative reviews and also say that this book probably isn't for everyone - esp. those who are mired in traditional forms like the reviewer who couldn't locate the plot in this book. I suspect this is a matter of taste on the reviewer's part and not that the author forgot or neglected to include something fundamental in her work.

That said, if you liked "On The Road" and "Catcher in the Rye" then you'll probably enjoy "Here They Come" as well. I think the other reviewer who mentioned Wes Anderson is right on with that comparison, too.

I'm very, very careful about what I read because my free time is so scarce - this book was well worth my time.

5 out of 5 starsBeautiful!, 2007-12-18
Yes, perhaps there is some truth to the not-so-good customer reviews, and yet these points are only to the author's credit. I have just finished Here They Come and am still reeling from it, with it. Beautifully written, the characters dance from the pages, and though theirs is not often a wholly pretty, graceful dance, the writing that depicts the steps is always pitch-perfect. I am a reader who finds faults in most published works, and here I found very few. I believed and believed in these characters, and while I was often appalled by their life, I also fell in love with it. When a writer can breathe such life into a fictional account that the reader then dreams of the characters, I'd say that that writer has been successful. Bravo, Ms. Murphy! I am anxious to begin her latest.

4 out of 5 starsWonderful - One of the Best Books of 2006, 2007-10-28
To all the reviewers who say this book has no plot and doesn't go anywhere, you may be right - but does it really matter? Here They Come reminds me of a Wes Anderson movie - there may not be a lot going on, but with such real characters and dialogue, who cares?

Murphys' writing is beautiful, funny, and fun to read - check it out.

2 out of 5 starsHere Sucks Come **SPOILERS**, 2006-06-03
What trash. Hasn't this been done before Yannick? Come on! You're reading and you want the Hot dog man to step it up and you want the shotgun to go off at least once. Oh my God why does everyone just point it at each other?! I know this is largely autobio but jeez, boring! Mom should get over 'merde.' Sort of well writtenish but generally lame everything else. Pretentious. Don't waste your time.

5 out of 5 starsFantastic!, 2006-05-01
I loved this book. I loved how she wove together all these beautifully written episodes that spiralled together and formed one great story about growing up. It was almost magical what she did. I never knew where the story was going to go next, but whatever direction it took, it always seemed to be the right direction.
