Product Description Paying Teachers for What They Know and Do looks at state and local efforts to change teacher compensation and proposes new and innovative pay strategies that are appropriate for education. The authors give examples of changes in compensation that are being implemented in schools across the country. They suggest ways that you can achieve higher teaching standards and more equitable pay for teachers in your school or district. They show how new methods of compensation used in private sector and nonprofit organizations-including competency-based pay, contingency-based pay, and group-based performance awards-have potential applications in education as well. Answers the following questions and more: * Are teachers paid equitably for what they do? * Should pay increases be based on seniority, skill level, or student achievement? * Does increased compensation motivate teachers and improve schools? Essential reading for principals, teachers, district staff, faculty of education, and all others concerned with improving schools and finding better ways to pay teachers for what they do.

Knowledge and Skills, 2000-08-23 Allan Odden and Caroly Kelley foreshadow teacher compensation alternatives that would elevate the art of teaching to a level of professional teaching. Governor Gray Davis (California) would be advised to add this book to his reading list.
