Great Book, but One Thing Left Out, 2008-11-26
I cannot add to what others have said on praising this book. It is required reading in the Alaskan DOC. One thing that I think needs to be added is that when serving, the most hardened prisoners are no problem in comparison to the people you serve with!
For the females serving, Spitale needs to talk about uplifting each other. I was recently on a ministry where I'd just found out that my grandmother had died. Unable to get to her anyway, I stayed with my team and was happy to do so and said nothing of my grandmother; I'm named for her and as my name is a bit unusual, everyone commented on it and I was like, "Oh, I was named for my grandmother." When not "on" in front of prisoners, I was quietly praying for my grandmother and my family. WHAT I was praying for was immaterial; I could have been praying for the prisoners, meditating, praying for my kids, etc. This was all in the privacy of our sleeping quarters. The hens talked and started ordering me to smile and when I said that I was meditating, they'd chirp through gritted teeth, "I just told you to smile! That's all." One old biddy decided to come up behind me and TICKLE me, giggling, "You look so serious!" (At that point I was swallowing cold pills.) Another woman wanted to know if I wasn't a morning person. The tickler still harasses me about looking serious and because she is 75 years old I am reluctant to go beyond, "Yes, we are in a prison and God made me to look serious and you really make me uncomfortable bringing this up." This has indeed made me LOATHE my ministry but I go for the women because God wants me there and I enjoy them when were are doing the outreach.
It cannot be understated that in the body of Christ, not everyone can be a humerus. Some of us are neurons. Our outreach is just as effective and vital as the other parts.
I also suggest that you will enjoy reading Dr. Duane Pederson's work, "How to Establish a Jail and Prison Ministry."

 Great introduction to prison ministry, 2008-03-22
What an impressive, Christ-focused primer on prison ministry. The author is an ex-offender who knows how to bring the Gospel to the incarcerated. Great refresher for those who have been at it for awhile and an even better introduction for those who are beginning to hear the call to go inside the razor wire.

A must read for those doing Prison Ministry, 2007-11-15
The first time I read "Prison Ministry" resulted in it being a major part of planting a seed in my heart for what is now one of my biggest passions. I've since read it two more times and each time words of wisdom have taught me something new or reminded me of some old.
Lennie Spitale is not hype or as Duncan Miller says in his review does not sensationalize but is sincere in his sharing and giving truthful insight to the world of prison ministry. If you, your church or someone you know is thinking of or doing prison ministry inside the walls or outside (mentoring former inmates, consoling families of incarcerated loved ones) I strongly recommend this book.
I too have met Lennie and he is as real as his book reads and the book is a reflection of Lennie's heart.
It gives you a wide range focus on the mindset of inmates from why they turn to crime and for some why it is so difficult to leave, how prison life effects them in regards to family and other loved ones and much more.
If you have a passion to serve the lost you'll learn from Lennie's own words that this nations prison are one of the most if not most plentiful harvests.

What a reference, 2007-06-20
I conduct a weekly bible study in the local state prison and before I went in I ordered this book and it was so very practical and put me at ease right away with the experience. Highly recommend

Incredible Insight, Devotional in Nature, 2006-02-24
This book gives you incredible insight to the minds of men in prison. The book is written in such a way that those who are not involved in prison ministry can use it as an inspirational book. It reinforces in practical and understandable terms that we are all fallen from grace and we all require redemption.
