Product Description The first novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Idiot Girls’ Action-Adventure Club is a rollicking tale of small-town peculiarity, dark secrets, and one extraordinary beauty pageant.
When her husband is offered a post at a small university, Maye is only too happy to pack up and leave the relentless Phoenix heat for the lush green quietude of Spaulding, Washington. While she loves the odd little town, there is one thing she didn’t anticipate: just how heartbreaking it would be leaving her friends behind. And when you’re a childless thirtysomething freelance writer who works at home, making new friends can be quite a challenge.
After a series of false starts nearly gets her exiled from town, Maye decides that her last chance to connect with her new neighbors is to enter the annual Sewer Pipe Queen Pageant, a kooky but dead-serious local tradition open to contestants of all ages and genders. Aided by a deranged former pageant queen with one eyebrow, Maye doesn’t just make a splash, she uncovers a sinister mystery that has haunted the town for decades.
“[Laurie Notaro] may be the funniest writer in this solar system.” –The Miami Herald

Great Fun!, 2008-07-22 Moving from Arizona to Washington State, due to husband Charlie's new university post, Maye Roberts is removed from familiar surroundings and her circle of friends. The quaint university town of Spaulding, Washington has a vast and unique population but Maye strikes out time after time as she looks for friends. The hilarity begins with her naïve encounter with a book group that turns out to be a coven of witches. After several equally funny friendship miscues, Maye decides to sign up for the town's well-publicized annual Sewer Pipe Queen Competition. In order to sign up for the contest, Maye needs the services of an Old Queen. With the spouse of her husband's boss needling her at every turn, Maye perseveres despite set-backs to secure the sponsorship of the "Queen of Queens." The title of the book refers to the multitude of Maye's "little white lies" and her other minor acts of misconduct while "looking for friendship in all the wrong places."

What is this????, 2008-06-19 I loved Laurie Notaro's other books. I just did not get his one and it was not at all funny or entertaining. I can read a book a day but it took over a month to make it through this. I should have abandoned it a long time ago!

LOVE Notaro, but not as good as her Essays, 2008-06-18 Kind of silly, and I can't believe there's something she's written that I don't LOVE LOVE. I guess her real life is just that much funnier. Kind of far fetched and taken from her other stories, but when told in fiction, just seem kind of silly. Am anxiously awaiting her next book which is holding up my free super saving shipping order of 3 other books.

Not the worst book, 2008-05-24 While this was not the best book, it was not the worst either. I hate not finishing a book so I kept plunging through hoping it would get better. I must say it finally did, about the last 25 pages. Quite a ways to wait, and the payoff wasn't that great. But again, not the worst book you'll ever read- but a bit on the boring side.

a little delight. , 2008-05-23 I really enjoyed this book; gave it to my best friend, she loved it too, gave it to my aunt, she also thought it was great. It's a fun story, and if you don't take yourself too seriously, have a good sense of humor and let yourself relax a little bit to get into the ridiculousness of it all, you'll have a good time. Crazy characters, insane situations, wonderful ending. I don't know what else you'd want from a fun little book. It was a delight.
