A great resource for a Benedictine followers., 2008-04-20
I bought this book on the recommendation of a friend who, with me is a Lay Cistercians of Gethsemani Abbey. It is a great primer for one who wants to follow the spirituality of St. Benedict and his sons and daughters. The book gives a history of the Benedictine Order and the various reforms that have occurred over time, including the history of the Cistercian reform and Order. It chapters on the Rule of St. Benedict, the tools of Benedictine Spirituality, the Benedictine experience of God, how to live this spirituality in community, in solitude, as an oblate, and in the world. It also includes the brief biographies of various saints and holy men and women who have followed the Benedictine spirituality. It includes morning and evening prayers for those who do not have another prayer regime.

Good Starting Point, 2007-01-01
Prior to reading the Rule of Saint Benedict or becoming involved with any Benedictine activity, an individual should have some foundation to stand upon in order to adequately understand how, what and why. "The Benedictine Handbook" is that foundation. It offers the reader a brief history of the Benedictine life as well as suggested prayers and the Rule of Saint Benedict.

Although an excellent introduction for the novice, an Oblate of Saint Benedict should delve deeper by using the prayers in the Liturgy of the Hours such as "Benedictine Daily Prayer: A Short Breviary."

Excellent Benedictine reference book, 2006-12-14
I have owned this book for about 3 months now and it makes for a very good reference book concerning all things benedictine. However, if your looking for a more spiritual explanation about the rule of benedict and how you can apply it to your day to day life try reading, "Finding Sanctuary: Monastic Steps for Everyday Life by Abbot Christopher Jamison:" This book will give you a step by step method to apply the main rules of benedict in your life. The above book is more of a refence guide which is just as important. Both books are a good source for anyone looking to become Oblates.

A 'MUST' for Benedictine Oblates, 2006-10-29
The Benedictine Handbook is a perfect resource for those interested in Benedictine Oblates, or for anyone simply interested in monastic literature and spirituality. Its contemporary translation of the Rule of Benedict is superb, and the abbreviated 2-week Liturgy of the Hours well laid out for readers looking for a short daily liturgical prayer form. The glossary of monastic terms, brief history and "who's who" are useful for newcomers and the essays are worth pondering by any serious reader.

This book was not helpful for living the spirit of the rule of St. Benedict. It would probably be good as a referene book
