 not what I was expecting., 2008-08-14
To clarify: this book is for the CBP OFFICER test. It is different from the CBP AGENT test.
I have applied to both CBP as an Agent and Officer, and had to take the Agent test first. I bought this: Border Patrol Exam, 3rd Edition (Border Patrol Exam) as a way to prepare for it. It was extremely useful for the logical reasoning portion. If you're like me, you know HOW to try and deduce questions, you just need practice with it. I scored very high on it, and I think this book helped me out because it basically has two practice exams in it. Hoping for something similar, I bought the passbook hoping that it would have something of the same, but with different portions (the Officer exam, on top of having a logical reasoning test, also has a written skills test and a math test). It certainly did not! There is one initial test that is just as good as the one you can find on CBP's website. Everything else in the book are small tests that get you to do math, reasoning and writing problems, but don't prepare you for how they are going to be asked on the actual test itself. I feel like this is a huge problem. For example: The math portion of the booklet has tests that flat out ask you how to do algebraic equations and the usual set of high school math. The problem with this is that the actual exam is not setup like that. The problems are given to you through a paragraph of information, which leads you to have to extract the information and set it up the right way, something that is a different skill set than just doing the math. Also, there shouldn't be a whole section on the personal assessment, as there is no way to physically prepare for it! It's not meant to be studied! I do not recommend buying this book.

This book contained sections of math, reasoning skills, english skills and individual achievement record similar to the test. I found the book useful.
