5 out of 5 starsAbsolute necessity for new school library media specialists, 2008-11-04
I am a recent MLS graduate and my first job out of school is as a school library media specialist - with no education experience or classes! I bought this book desperate for any help at all, but not having my hopes too high because it's often hard to learn practical information for a job from a book. I was so extremely surprised and happy with this book! I read it during the month before I started my new job. From day one on the job, I was so thankful I had read this book! It was right on in so many ways and has been an absolute God send for me. However, I could see that this book could be too basic for anyone who has taken school library media classes during your MLS program. But for anyone without that experience interested in a school library career path, or like me, about to enter it - you will love this book!

3 out of 5 starsNew on the job:A school library media specialist's guide to sucess, 2008-09-30
Book is centered on elementary school library positions, a bit general. If you are hired in a library for a college, this is not the book.

5 out of 5 starsGreat product for new media specialists just starting out!, 2008-07-15
I actually refer all new media specialists to this book. It is easy to read and you will catch yourself agreeing with much of what the author has to say. I found it very helpful during my first year as a media specialist and recommend it to everyone I know!

5 out of 5 starsA "Key Ideas" summary reinforces the lessons of each chapter, in this enthusiastically recommended supplementary resource , 2007-03-06
Library media consultants Ruth Toor and Hilda K. Weisburg present New on the Job: A School Library Media Specialist's Guide to Success, a compendium of tips, tricks, and techniques drawn from experience, gathered and presented for school librarians in general and school library media specialists in particular. Chapters cover how to secure a job, connecting with students and teachers, dealing with advances in technology, career ethics and standards, and much more. Written in plain terms, with numerous "write your answer in the blank" questions for personal insight (such as, "What is the procedure for opening blocked websites? Who has the authority to do so?" with a blank underneath so one can learn the answer and write it down for quick reference later). A "Key Ideas" summary reinforces the lessons of each chapter, in this enthusiastically recommended supplementary resource for library media specialists, sure to prove useful to veterans in addition to its target audience of career beginners.
