Product Description
Being the "new kid" in school can be pretty tough... recent library school graduates, non-librarian professionals, and others unfamiliar with the process may find setting up and running a school library media center a daunting task. While libraries may vary greatly in terms of the resources at their disposal, the process of setting up a quality media program is basically the same. The New Steps to Service is a vital resource in presenting the basic steps for creating and maintaining a school library media center that works for students and you. In handbook style for easy reference, The New Steps to Service features chapters grouped in three sections: Handling Materials, Dealing with Details, and Working with People. Use it for practical advice on such basics as collection development, selection, taking inventory, classifying, cataloging, budgeting, and more. Build support with constituents -- parents, teachers, and administrators -- with public relations pointers. Get started on advancing your career by learning how to build a network of colleagues and develop yourself professionally.

Excellent introduction for new school librarians.
, 1999-07-15
This book is an excellent introduction to operating a school library media center. It will be most useful to the new librarian, especially to those without an MLS. This book provides suggestions on a wide range of topics including the selection of materials, options on how to control the circultion of AV equipment, and how to schedule class time in the library.
