Amazon.com Review In a galaxy far, far away, beautiful Jenise will do anything to escape marriage to her late stepfather's evil brother, Karpon. When she discovers that Karpon has captured a powerful shapechanger, Gian Ren, she decides to make him an offer he can't refuse. Gian Ren has been drugged, stripped, and chained to a wall. Despite his circumstances, Jenise is wary, for even chained the shapechanger is formidable. Surprisingly, he accepts her unusual request that he deflower her in exchange for her aid in escaping. Gian passionately accomplishes his part of the bargain and within moments, the two set off on a perilous journey, fleeing from Karpon and his soldiers. Mine to Take has action, adventure, and enough steamy sensuality to light up the night sky. H-O-T!

A man to make a woman purr in more ways than one..., 2008-08-18 When I unexpectedly stumbled upon the one copy of Mine to Take in a second-hand book shop, I nearly caused the whole shelf to tumble with my greedy haste to snatch it up. Then I had to tuck the front cover away from other eyes, having peeped at the cover and recalled exactly what kind of picture it had. *That* one I will ogle at in private. LOL.
The whole premise of an otherwordly galaxy, of Familiars, Charls, and such were very interesting - the introduction of Gian Ren in the first chapter was sure to hook the reader head on. Case in point:
"He tossed his hair back and viewed her through half-lowered eyes. The eyes of the ultimate pursuer. Secretive, disciplined, and sexual. His voice was a low, rumbling purr..."
In fact, Gian unapologetically dominates the love story, with his obvious magnetism, good `ol gallantry, and contagious sense of humor. Jenise, although herself a bit strong-willed, still displayed moments of helplessness in the face of the Familiar's sensual assault (it's okay...we understand how you must have felt). The interaction between the two was definitely electric. Their lovemaking very passionate without being risqué.
Though I enjoyed the story, I admit I was not quite satisfied with the whole anti-climactic feel to it. There were a lot of loose-ends - what with the revenge of Karpon, the fate of the badly-injured Dariq, the menace of the Observer, and the destiny of Traed and Rejar. Sometimes the love story of Gian and Jenise took a backseat when the other characters' stories had to be told in portions. And the ending part, after Gian's Incarnation, felt a little hurried. There should have been more emotional weight given on the decisions Jenise had to take concerning accepting being queen of the Familiars, the choices Gian had had to make in taking her to M'yan.
What it all boils down to, anyway, is that I'm now itching to have the rest of the series. Dara Joy certainly knows how to dangle a story and make her reader clamor for more. Despite some reservations, this was an entertaining read.

Love the King of all Familiar!, 2008-06-21 I must confess I never usually give a book five stars, but this one deserved it and more. I love Dara Joy's wonderful gift of writing. This book had it all, adventure, a wonderful futuristic world with terrific monsters, and a hero that could melt anyone's heart. Love the way he sends her sexy thoughts telepathically while they make love! Whew, hot love scenes, and this heroine was really fiesty, which I love. I had issues with the heroine in Rejar, she got on my nerves. But this is my favorite book in the series. All three are hilarious, sexy and will really involve you in the characters. Gian Ren is her best hero. I read the series backwards, but this is my favorite. A keeper that you will re-read on a regular basis!

Another great book!!!, 2008-04-20 I have mentioned the first book in this series"Knight of a Trillion Stars". The second, "Mine to Take" is even better!! I felt connected to the characters. Which is very unusual! Please read these 2 books. I know it is just my opinion, but I loved them. Look in the library for them they are , not new books!

I love this book..., 2007-09-01 I read the series out of order and was a bit confused until I'd gone through the entire series. It was even better on the second read. And third. And so on. Lovely.

Purrfect Male Lead!, 2007-04-03 I read all the reviews before ordering this book, and I'm very grateful for the encouragement to find it. This is a wonderful story and goes into my keeper pile.
First, I loved the creative love-making of the 'Familiars.' There's an anthology out there called 'Alien Sex' that contains short stories of alien, non-human, love-making adventures, and this story would have fit right in. I've long wondered about an imaginative way to present other humanoid love, and here it is! At first, you might be temptted to say - 'yeah right', but Dara Joy finds a way to make it convincing.
Secondly, the adventure of the story was entertaining. The worlds that they visited, and the sights, peoples they encountered as they escaped the Ganakari people, were fun.
I do think that the book represents a missed opportunity to really explore alien cultures. The setting were brushed over lightly. There were a few Star Wars moments - as if the author had watched a couple Star Wars movies and drawn setting details from the movie. So in that sense, the science fictional aspects of the story were luke warm. I very much think more could have been done with the female lead, the fact that she was actually the queen of the planet from which she was escaping got left out after about the first third of the book. I expected Gian to use the fact that he was with the queen of the Ganakari during his confrontation with their leader, to bring peace to their peoples. There were also tantalizing hints about Jenise's late blooming magnetic abilities. Anything special about her got dropped from the story. I thought her 'dance' - the one time only dance of the Frensi People, was a bit lame. More could have been made of the Frensi's culture & Jenise's birthright.
But at bottom, this book is a tender sexual awakening story. About someone who is searching for her independence, and has her journey co-opted by her male companion - in a predatorial sense. But since he's a 'cat,' you have the sense that she should have been watching for that. In fact, he warns her several times in chapter 2, when she meets, him, that she is in over her head where he is concerned, but she insists on her pre-arranged course of action. Actions have consequences - that's one of the axioms of fiction. And the guy has his own journey to figure out how to make the woman eventually fully embrace him, and her own sensuality. But, dear reader, when you look at the cover art for this one, don't be fooled into thinking the guy is not in control, as Jenise did.
Interesting to compare Gian, the Familiar, with Leopard-man, Ravyn, from Dark Side of the Moon, by Sherrilyn Kenyon - although I have to admit I also liked Vane, the big wolf, from Night Play. Mine To Take also compares well with Silver Angel by Johanna Lindsey, thematically, in terms of a sexual awakening story. In that regard, it also can be compared with Fantasy Lover by Sherrilyn Kenyon.
