5 out of 5 starsIntense!, 2007-12-17
This book is very very intense, I've only begun recently with it but I hope to become as much of a master as Mr. Van Eps. His approach to getting acquainted with "awkward" fingerings is very useful. If you purchase this book, do his fingerings exactly as he wants you to do them!

5 out of 5 starsFor serious guitarists, 2007-04-18
These book is so deep and sophisticated harmonically, that they might not apply to all skill levels (let alone the fact that it is staff notation). That being said, it is truely one of the masterpieces on guitar harmony. I have investigated and studied literally hundreds of guitar books, and this rates among the best.

5 out of 5 starsSo much to use, 2006-08-30
There is so much to be drawn from using this book. It takes you through so much, and the way that it's presented it's better to not mind the specifics, because so much of the material is interrelated, it allows you to "forget" what you learn and improve your harmonic vocabulary in general. I have benefited from using it and have not come close to finishing it. Rest assured, I plan on finishing it, and then by the time I die I'll finish the other two volumes. but whatever, it's about the journey, right?

5 out of 5 starsIt's exactly what it says is it is: -NOT- a "chord book"{., 2006-04-15
First of all, it should be known who Van Eps was: A guitarist who specialized in highly sophisticated chord-melody work, with an elaborate system of fingering harmonized lines to play them as perfectly, (without the squeaking most players get by merely sliding into positions), as is possible on the instrument. He called the guitar the 'lap piano', and his playing reflected that point of view. If this doesn't mean a lot to you, perhaps the other books some reviewers have mentioned will be
all you need. If, however, you which to truly master the mechanics required for the musical performance of all of the possible harmonized lines on guitar, no other book is even -attempting- the objective. I love Ted Green, and his methods definitely provide a better 'quick fix' for less serious players, but let's not bow to our current limitations if we have the potential to take the next step.

1 out of 5 starsNot the easiest way of learning guitar harmony, 2006-03-06
"Contemporary Chord Khancepts" and "Chord Chemistry" (in that order) are much easier books for learning harmony on guitar. He comes up with this unnecessarily complex system of arranging inversions according to strings used that takes two entire pages to explain. He then has to repeat the instructions on how to use it two or three more times over the course of the book.

It basically shows you how to play scales harmonized in different inversions and that's about it. Virtually nothing about application of this to real music, a problem I saw a lot of in the older Mel Bay material. "This is a melodic minor scale harmonized with triads"-ok, but why is it called a melodic minor scale, how do I harmonize a scale and how do I use that in a song.

I normally don't like writing a bad review of a book because I'm sure he put a lot of time and effort into writing this book and it has probably helped some people explore the guitar better. Moreover, I've never written anything that has taught as many people harmony as he has through this book. But this book is 25 years old and I don't think I'm going to seriously cut into his profits much by saying the above recommended books are much better for learning harmony on guitar. I hear he is a great guitarist. Also, if you are interested in music theory enough to read 300-400 pages of it, read Kirnberger's "Art of Strict Musical Composition". Written by one of J.S. Bach's student's about how he taught students to compose harmony; its worth the search.
