Editorial Reviews
Product Description
The goal of this study is to provide a risk assessment of the global oil market. Cordesman and Al-Rodhan study six major oil-producing regions of the world: the Middle East, Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Europe and Eurasia, North America, and South and Central America. In each case, the authors outline national oil developments and focus on four major areas of risks and uncertainties: macroeconomic fluctuations, geopolitical risks, oil production uncertainties, and the nature of resources.

1 out of 5 starsNot a book at all, 2006-12-16
To be called a terrible book, this "work" would have to improve a great deal. This "work" simply does not fit into a book format; it is a gross compilation of other people's studies, and in its case, the EIA's work (and not even the latest), which is updated every year.
It doesn't bring anything new. The author just proves that he is able to read and copy the EIA's work, which you can get from free on the web.
The title is totally misleading. Do not waste your time reading it, or - worse - your money buying it.
There are good books about the oil market on the market. If you want to understand it, read Mabro, Odell, Adelman; then, if you want to know how creative people can be in trying to forecast the future of the oil market, go to the EIA, IEA, or even OPEC, for their latest studies; you do not need a compilation of an out-of-date EIA study, in the wrong format, and to pay for it.

4 out of 5 starsquick overview of world oil, 2006-09-21
If you are interested in a quick overview of the global oil situation, consider this book. It succinctly describes the major geopolitical uncertainties. But there is also a key uncertainty about the true amount of extractable oil remaining in the world. "Known" versus "undiscovered" versus "proven" figure prominently in this debate. Then there are uncertainties in how quickly existing oil fields will decline in production. These resource risks are separate from the geopolitical risks, but add to the latter. The text analyses the main oil producing countries. Looking at estimates of how much remaining oil each has, and at the stability of those societies.

The global gas scene is also studied. An industry that is a cousin to the oil business, and whose reserves may prove crucial in future years. One prospect for gas is in converting it to oil. Something hitherto not very prominent. But the drawing down of oil reserves might necessitate this one day.
