4 out of 5 starsQuick read - a MUST for anyone who still drinks milk!, 2008-07-23
I was already aware of a lot of the information in this book, but it was useful - and really rather astounding - to have it all gathered in one small book. I would love to see all of America read this book, just to balance out the propaganda with which we are bombarded from the dairy industry's marketing and "public service" gurus. The only milk that "does a [human] body good" is human milk. Dr. Oski definitely makes that point in this book, in which he focuses on the adverse physical and emotional effects dairy products have on humans. Based on the varied research he cites, we should all be persuaded to stop drinking the milk of other species... and he doesn't even delve into the environmental or humanitarian aspects of the subject!

4 out of 5 starsIf the calf stops drinking milk why am I drinking it?, 2008-04-15
This easy to read book has good references and makes common sense. It should be read by every health class student.

2 out of 5 starsNeeds to be updated, 2008-01-09
The title is very misleading. First, the word "New" needs to be removed. The data he uses is from the 1960s and 1970s. This book focuses most on the benefits of breastfeeding and infants. I did learn a bit about milk, but thought the book would be more inclusive of all ages, and have more updated information. Although it is reasonable for mothers to breastfeed, he never even touches on the effects of a mother who drinks milk (eats ice-cream, yogurt, etc) and breastfeeds, only on why you should not give your infant milk or milk-based formula. The proteins and sugars from the cow's milk passes through the nursing mother's milk, and can cause gastrointestinal distress to the infant (one source of colic).
Also, it has been recently suggested a link between acne and milk consumption exists. Taking my teenager off all dairy products (he was drinking 1/2 gal. per day) cleared up all his acne, with no medication. He never discusses the effects of milk on teens, acne, weight gain, etc.
Nothing on the bovine hormones and/or antibiotics which may (or may not?) be passed on to humans who drink milk. If you do not mind reading material which is 30-40 years old, an interesting and informative read. Otherwise, I found it to be a disappointing purchase.

5 out of 5 starsGood Book!!, 2007-04-27
Dr. Frank Oski's seminal book on milk is must read for anyone still drinking the stuff. Although the book was originally published in 1983 and some of the facts may be a bit dated, the overall message is as clear now as it was then.....Don't Drink Your Milk!

5 out of 5 starsIt Does A Body BAD, 2007-03-14
Drink milk, it is high in protein, and calcium, good for your bones. Doctors in England have found a link between Nations that are highly dependent on dairy, and the high rates of breast, and ovarian cancer. Other studies have shown elimentating dairy improves the symptom of arthritis, as well. One thing the author here explains is what calcium is good for, to neutralize acids, and sugars, we consume daily. He may also have mentioned it, and may have missed it but calcium is also used to neutralize protien, specifically animal protien. As for milk, the lower the fat content, the higher the protien content. I mention this because animal protien is the biggest cause of calcium leeching. Not to mention caffine. Calcium leeching leads to osteoporosis.

So we march marrily along to the doctor's office to get some supplimental calcium. But we continue to consume dairy products, and animal protien further weakening our bones. Akin to trying to fill a bucket with a hole in the bottom. As yet another reviewer has mentioned we do not need milk once we are weaned, and even before that we certainly do not need the milk from an animal.

This book is loaded with good information for the health conscious, and the uninformed. Educate yourself, your family and friends about how milk does a body bad.

Oh and did I mention the growth hormones, the steroids, and the anti-bacterial agents found in dairy products, and how some years back girls as young as 8, and 9 years of age were begining to develope breasts, and grow pubic hair. All of this traced to the consumption of dairy products loaded with growth hormones.

Do your body good read this very well written, and informative book, and question the habit we have of consuming dairy products.
