The results of this survey show some surprising results. I was particularly surprised that this survey's findings showed a Project Management Office to offer limited value.

The authors provide a well researched overview on what works for others when running a project. As far as business books go, this one is an enjoyable read that will yield a few new ideas for improving the way you work.

Interesting read, 2008-01-27
I don't think this book on its own is going to help anybody become an Alpha project manager, but it is interesting and gives you some ideas to start with. This is a non-scientific study, and in a few places you can tell, but for the most part it was well researched and the extrapolations are pretty convincing. It's not an overly long book, so you don't need to invest several weeks of free time to get the major learnings out of it. Recommended for project managers or people who want to be project managers.

Stakeholder perception is key, 2007-11-29
On the surface, the book provides an affirmation of many things that seem like common sense to do. In many chapters, both the Alpha and the non-Alpha believe they are doing the same things. However, it is the perspective of the stakeholder that counts. The Alpha project managers clearly handle things differently. One interesting summary was that Alpha project managers only seem to exist in organizations that support project management. You can have a race car project manager, but the racetrack has to be conducive to speed. Otherwise the race car is no better than any other car on the mud road.

An excellent read, concise overview of practical techniques to improve your project management skills. Well written with astute observations regarding what the best project managers do and what they avoid. I highly recommend.
