1 out of 5 starsIf this system is supposed to be so good, why is Tom wrong so often?, 2008-03-11
I've listened to Tom's radio show over the past few years, and I can tell you that he got prematurely bullish in May/June 2006, prematurely bearish in fall 2007 and prematurely bullish in January/February 2008. Each time, the market went against his prediction for 1 to 2 months, with losses of 10% or more. Sorry, but if I was buying a book called "Timing the Trade", I would want one that worked better than that. The system is so subjective, that even the author and system inventor can't use it right.

If you like Richard Wychoff's trading system, which is what Tom bases his system on, then look at Hank Pruden's book, which is infinitely better than this one. If you don't want to be a trader, but want to make consistent money in the long run, read Michael Covel's books on Trend Following. The guys he profiles have made billions over the long term, and not by trying to trade for a few points here and there, like Tom does. Or you can read IBD and learn from Bill O'Neill's years of studying winners, and follow a system that has been verified by AAII as a winning system.

Overall, Tom's system is far too complicated for most people to follow without making costly mistakes. If you want to shell out an additional $2500, you can attend one of his Master Trader courses. No thanks, Tommy, I'm keeping my bread. Bottom line, there are easier and lower risk ways of making money than the one he describes here.

3 out of 5 starsOverrated and Overpriced, 2008-03-01
I purchased the book after reading the great reviews this book received here on Amazon. Information provided is precise, clear and OK quality. But definitely not worth the money. May be OK for newbies. Experienced traders would already know most of what is there in the book.

I thought this was a pretty good book. It did not go into great depth in any one area when TA was discussed, but did a good job focusing on some fairly important trading philosophies as to when to enter a trade and when to get out and paying attention to volume as a confirmation tool. I thought it was a good book especially if you are fairly new to trading, for the experienced trader it did not offer as much although it did reinforce some important trading "rules". I liked in particular the chapters concerning Confluence & Jumping the Creek, Coming back to Ice.
