Product Description

Index Funds: The 12-Step Program for Active Investors is the treatment of choice for wayward investors. John Bogle called Hebner s book "incredibly handsome and wise," while Burton Malkiel stated that "Hebner gives good advice presented in a very appealing manner." Nobel Laureate Paul Samuelson calls it "a valuable reference," and Anders Oldenger of Seligson & Company nominated it as one of the three "All-time Greatest Investment Books," along with the writings of John Bogle and Warren Buffett.

Hebner s book addresses why an overwhelming majority of investors continue to embrace an active investing strategy, despite the extensive academic research demonstrating its ineffectiveness to beat a market index and the overall futility of such a strategy. Speculating on the next winning stock, fund manager, investment style or market timing are all akin to gambling. Below market returns in investment portfolios and pension accounts are the result of investors gambling with their hard earned money. This 12-Step Program will put active investors on the road to recovery. Each step is designed to bring investors closer to embracing a prudent and sound strategy of buying, holding, and rebalancing a risk-calibrated portfolio of passively managed, globally diverse index funds.

5 out of 5 starsThe 12 Commandments of Investing, 2009-11-02

Mark Hebner's 12-Steps book on Indexing is among the best that I have read on the subject of investments over the past 20 years.

Although I live in India, almost all that Mark has written about investing, the basic principles are like the `law of gravity' and they are applicable everywhere in this universe, irrespective of geographical location.

That is why I call the book `The 12 Commandments of Investing' and Mark `liberates' investors from the clutches of the Pharaohs' of active management.

He enlightens us with the fact that a) the market itself is the best pricing mechanism that ever was and will be and hence it is crucial to eliminate the futile guess work (dart throwing) at attempting to pick stocks, identify managers or time the markets. b) It is important to identify the sources of risk and capture them via passive portfolios-this decides the return. Hence passive investing as suggested by Mark has to be the quintessential investment strategy.

After digesting this wonderful book, an analogy comes to my mind...plain water is inexpensive, simple, straight forward, abundantly available, not risky and crucial to our existence. Water is so easy to understand that even animals know this God given drink!

All `actively managed & structured derivatives' of water such as carbonated drinks, beverages, alcohol, sodas, cocktails, juices, and so on are expensive, complex, unhealthy, confusing with too many similar products in each category and not very reliable.

We take water for granted, the derivates of water are heavily advertised and hence apparently impressive...however nothing can replace water as the quintessential life giving drink.

The downside of water-it is `boring' whereas the actively managed derivatives of water are `exciting and a titillation' to our taste buds.

In my analogy, water is the passive index fund-the `water of life and of investments.'

Investors take your pick and eliminate all the `non-systemic' risks that are often associated with the actively managed derivates of water!

Index Funds: The 12-Step Program for Active Investors

Anyone thinking about investing in stocks should read this book first. It is one of the best books I have read that explains the interworkings of stock brokers and investing risks. Your financial future depends on how you invest, and this book is a tell-all on time proven techniques that most people are not aware of.

Hebner really opened my eyes to the fast paced, high transaction costs of mutual funds and individual stocks. Not only does he reveal the smoke and mirror operations of mutual fund managers, but he provides a sensible, stress free alternative matched to an investors willingness to accept risk. This book is an essential addition to the informed investor's library.

5 out of 5 starsRead the book before you throw more money away., 2008-06-06
IF you "think" you understand the market, and you think you are smarter than the average bear (no pun intended) then you really ought to be smart enough to admit you did not understand your problem until you read Mark's book on Index Funds.

Hebner, covers all the bases to intelligent investing in a delightful manner. Once you understand that outperforming markets is a battle that can't be won over time you will be well on your way to successful investing. This book doesn't want you to roll dice, throw darts, or flip coins but to invest in Markets(essentially capitalism). Markets are known to grow over time and THAT is what you're investing in, the overall growth of economies.

The book is very easy to read but advanced enough for seasoned finacial experts. Hebner leaves no stone unturned. The book contains lots of great data, facts, graphs and charts. Look at the returns of some of the portfolios in this book. They are more risk diverse than the S&P 500, achieve greater returns, and their is a portfolio for every need. The average investor can achieve returns of the top financial experts with the asset allocation knowledge in this book. You'll truely understand how markets and stock prices work after this read.
