Blown Away, 2008-08-30
I was blown away with the information contained in this book. Scott provides a very detailed analysis of the available research and shows how we have been duped into believing the magicians of the bio-medical field of psychiatry. For too long when someone criticizes the field they are accused of being anti psychiatry. To be clear, this isn't an anti psychiatry book but it is an anti medical model of psychiatry book and that is an important distinction.
The booked is meticulously researched and is a must read for anyone wanting the real inside information. All psychiatrists should be made to read this book and then ask themselves if they still believe in what they are doing. I cannot imagine any "sane" person wanting to still dole out drugs to people in emotional distress after reading this book. Only someone in massive denial and with delusions of grandeur could continue to practice under the medical model of psychiatry after they educated themselves on the reality of the harm they cause.
This will be a hard book to refute!

An eye opening experience to Corporate America...a must read., 2008-07-07
There are many things we take for granted in this world and because of it we have been fooled and taken advantage of for the purpose of greed. This book opens your eyes and helps expose the reasons and the "hows" on what large drug companies are doing.

A Must-Read for a Valuable Learning Experience, 2007-06-19
I'm an electrician, not a medical person. In fact, this was the first book I've read from cover to cover in several years. I thought I might not be able to understand this book, but that was not the case at all. It is easily understood and needs to be read by more and more people. Americans need to understand that FDA approval of a drug does not mean that a drug works. To receive FDA approval, all a drug must do is to prove it's better than a placebo. That may be acceptable for most medical problems, but it's not an acceptable standard for depression. The reason it's not is that any pill that causes any of the same side effects (dry mouth, nervousness, or just "not feeling like myself"---all of which have often been reported for these drugs) will cause the drug test subjects to know they have the real drug and, therefore, the real drug generally beats out a sugar pill even if it does not work. Cancer drugs, diabetes drugs, and heart drugs could all be given for depression, and the author points out that they all would beat out the placebo. In the case of developing cancer drugs, actual lab test results must prove they work better than a placebo. The same is true for heart medications or diabetes medicine. But for depression there are no lab tests---a questionnaire is used, and people are simply asked, "How do you feel?" None of this would matter much if these drugs were not harmful. I learned that, unfortunately, the FDA approves antidepressants based on 4, 6 and 8-week studies. It's now coming to light that long-term use of these drugs causes diabetes, liver damage, an irreversible disease similar to Parkinson's Disease called tardive dyskinesia, and several other serious problems. If you or any of your family members are on an antidepressant (or an antipsychotic which has a similar story), please read this book. Used copies are cheaper, but even at full retail, the information in this book makes it a definite value. It is important to read.

An eye-opener!, 2007-06-15
Anyone on antidepressants or thinking of taking them should pick this up first. Dr. Scott definitely did his research and the facts are astounding, as well as scary. I would definitely recommend this to everyone who is concerned with the junk America is cramming blindly down their throats.
